A Breakfast Guide to Istanbul

Istanbul is a city full of history and grandeur, known for its colourful markets and bustling streets. But it’s also known for its amazing range of delicious breakfast spots, from traditional Turkish eateries to modern cafes and bistros. Here’s a guide to the best breakfasts in town.

Baclava Cafe

For a truly authentic Turkish breakfast experience, head to Baclava Cafe on İstiklal Caddesi. The menu here is full of classic Turkish breakfast dishes like simit (a light and chewy bagel-like bread), menemen (scrambled eggs with tomatoes and peppers), white cheese, olives and grapefruit tea. You can even get a plate of sweet baclava pastry to start the day off right. Prices are very reasonable – expect to pay between 10-15TL per person.

My personal say: The atmosphere and history in this place are hard to beat. I’ve been visiting Baclava Cafe for years, and it’s always a treat to start the day here. Highly recommended.

Mikla, The Marmara Hotel

If you’re looking for something a little more high-end, head up to the 16th floor of The Marmara Hotel, home of the acclaimed Mikla restaurant. This beautiful restaurant, designed by renowned Turkish architect Sinan Kafadar, offers stunning views of the city below, as well as a delightful open-buffet style breakfast. Expect an array of international flavours, from classic Turkish pastries to smoked salmon and poached eggs. Prices range from 47TL-79TL per person, depending on options selected.

My personal say: A great place to treat yourself to an indulgent breakfast. Spectacular views, great food and service, and enough variety to please any palate. Well worth the price tag.

The Sailor Moon Istanbul

This fun and quirky cafe is sure to be a hit with tourists. Located in Karaköy district on the edge of the Galata bridge, The Sailor Moon Istanbul celebrates the classic cartoon character with bright, colourful decor and even Sailor Moon themed drinks and desserts. And of course, there are plenty of traditional breakfast options too, like eggs in purgatory with feta cheese and labne (yogurt cheese.) Prices range from 15-25TL per person.

My personal say: Absolutely adorable place! The decor here is like stepping back into childhood. I loved the Greek-inspired breakfast dishes – especially the eggs in purgatory with feta cheese. I definitely recommend giving this one a try.

Siş Boğazı

Siş Boğazı is a fantastic spot in old school cocktail bar in Beyoğlu district run by two brothers – both accomplished baristas and chefs. This is where locals come for great cocktails and house music, but during the day it transforms into an entirely different kind of place – a cafe serving fantastic breakfasts from all over the world. Standouts include the famous St Louis French Toast (brioche toast soaked in maple syrup custard) and the Mexican breakfast burrito with black beans, scrambled eggs and salsa verde. Prices range from 15-25TL per person.

My personal say: One of the most unique cafes I’ve ever been to – totally worth making the trip out here. The French Toast is definitely a must-have! Would highly recommend if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary for breakfast.

Barista Corner

Last but not least is Barista Corner, located on İstiklal Caddesi near Taksim Square. This trendy cafe runs on a combination of traditional Turkish breakfast staples as well as espresso-based coffee drinks from around of the world, so you can expect a diverse menu full of interesting flavour combinations. Standouts include the goat cheese omlette with roasted tomatoes and feta cheese, as well as the churro french toast made with honey, cinnamon sugar mascarpone cheese and fresh fruit. Prices are reasonable – expect to pay between 10-15TL per person.

My personal say: An amazing brunch spot! The coffee selection here is impressive, but I was really impressed with their breakfasts – it’s really creative stuff that I hadn’t seen anywhere else. Definitely worth checking out!
