The stunning and historic city of Sarajevo is rich in culture, architecture and a long-held tradition for community and hospitality. Joining together East and West, this city of both European and Asian influences has so much to offer visitors in terms of attractions, food, shopping and many other activities. From the iconic Old Bridge, to the bustling narrow cobbled streets of Baščaršija, there are plenty of exciting attractions to explore. One of Sarajevo’s most popular tourist destinations is the nearby city of Mostar, with its gorgeous old bridge linking both halves of the city. But Sarajevo itself is home to many lesser-known attractions, such as the Monastery of Blagaj and the attractive medieval village of Počitelj, as well as the majestic Kravice Falls. Here we look at a comprehensive guide to visiting these sites during your stay in Sarajevo.

Travel to Mostar

Mostar is one of the top tourist attractions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in the south of the country and just 3 hours away from Sarajevo by bus. While Mostar is home to many historical attractions, the most iconic site is the Old Bridge – Stari Most, a beautiful Ottoman-style bridge, dating from 1566. Its ivory stone arches span 28 metres over the Neretva River, adding beauty to this already spectacular landscape. Visit the 16th-century Kulahisar Castle for incredible views over the city and don’t forget to stop at one of the area’s many interesting museums for an insight into the war-torn history of the region. No visit to Mostar would be complete without tasting the famous Ćevapčići (a Bosnian fast-food dish) from one of its many eateries – something that this vibrant city excels at.

Discover Blagaj

Blagaj is a small village and popular tourist destination just a 40-minute drive outside Sarajevo. This small-village settlement is home to two important Muslim sites – Tekiya (Dervish House) and Blagaj Monastery, with both representing an important part of Turkish culture in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Tekiya Dervish House lies close to a powerful water spring, making it one of Europe’s most significant natural landmarks. Due to its significance it has received UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Not far from the Tekiya lies Blagaj Monastery – an attractive Franciscan monastery with attractive architecture and stunning views across the river. This sleepy little village is also home to some charming cafes and eateries serving up delicious local dishes.

Ancient Počitelj

Počitelj is a stunningly beautiful historic village located in southern Herzegovina and just under two-hours away from Sarajevo. Built in 1383 during the Ottoman Empire period, it represents an early example of urban architecture and planning in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The village sits in a sheltered valley, with winding cobbled streets running throughout, making it a great destination for this type of exploration. At the centre of town lies the 16th-century Gavrakapetan Tower and nearby Church of Saint George – both representing some of Počitelj’s most important cultural landmarks.

Kravice Falls

No visit to Sarajevo or Mostar would be complete without visiting the stunning Kravice Falls, located approximately 2.5 hours away from Sarajevo by car. Located near town Ljubuški at river Trebižat, Kravice Falls is a natural phenomenon such as few anywhere in Europe. Situated amid lush green surroundings, these 87 metre cascades mark one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most prominent destinations; with almost 170 metres wide at their fullest they’re double the width of Niagara Falls! Thanks to its lush surroundings which host a variety of colourful flora, as well as its clear turquoise waters, Kravice Falls make for an idyllic nature escape and are also great for swimming amongst its cascades.
