Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain and the cosmopolitan capital of the Catalonia region. With over two million inhabitants, this vibrant city offers a wide selection of unique eateries to try out. From traditional local cafés to trendy breakfast spots, here is a guide to the best breakfast spots in Barcelona.

1. Young Cocoa

Young Cocoa is a popular contemporary bakery and coffee house near La Rambla and Plaça de Catalunya, a few steps away from the old port. Serving up tasty pastries and hot drinks to start the day, this small yet modern spot has become an Instagram favorite among locals and tourists alike. Stop by for one of their incredible pancakes or brioche toast, as well as their all-day breakfast or brunch plates. Enjoy sweet treats like strawberry muffins, strawberry milkshakes, maple syrup-covered toast and coffee smoothies. The atmosphere of this spot is buzzing and it’s the perfect place to meet up with friends before heading off to your next adventure.

Personal opinion: I love the modern atmosphere of Young Cocoa and the wide selection of breakfasts they offer. It’s the perfect place to start your day in Barcelona and I would definitely recommend it.

El Gaintxo is a traditional local restaurant serving up Basque cuisine in Barcelona. With a great selection of brekkies, from croque monsieur and jamón y queso sandwiches to eggs and potatoes, as well as some light pastries, this place truly is a diamond in the ruff. There’s plenty of love here at El Gaintxo, with all orders freshly made with local ingredients, served with warm hospitality and a friendly smile. This place has it all.

Personal opinion: There’s something truly special about El Gaintxo that you won’t find anywhere else in Barcelona. It’s one of my favorite spots to grab a traditional local breakfast – the croque monsieur is amazing!

3. The Botanist

The Botanist is an incredibly popular breakfast spot in Barcelona’s hip Barri Gòtic quarter. Offering an extensive menu of freshly prepared meals, this bi-level eatery offers something for everyone. With seating both indoors and outdoors, it’s the perfect spot for people watching – you can watch the locals go by while sipping your smoothie or brunching with friends. Enjoy the likes of granola with natural yogurt and oats, avocado on sourdough, or even lemon and ricotta pancakes with banana slices. It’s definitely worth checking out.

Personal opinion: The Botanist is an awesome spot for brunch in Barcelona, with plenty of vegan and vegetarian options to choose from. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual, which makes it an ideal place to hang out with friends on a sunny day.

4. Et Spot etera de neu

Et Spot etera de neu is one of those places that you just have to visit when in Barcelona. 5. Punt Torrefactoria Creativa

Located near Plaça de Espanya at Maria Cristina Palace, Punt Torrefactoria Creativa is a café created by passionate owners Fernando Clavijo and Claudia Felip Arbonés. This trendy venue serves up some amazing breakfasts – try their poached eggs with crunchy bacon, creamy burrata yogurt with fruit and granola or freshly made waffles with berry jam for something sweet.
