Here you can take a ferry trip and join a group guided tour where you will be directed to view the penguins in their natural colony. The island is a very popular tourism attraction and the ferry trip alone is usually fully booked during peak season.

On a smaller scale, another way to view penguins is at Simon’s Town on the East side of False Bay. Here, you’ll have to pay a fee to enter the area known as Boulders Beach as it’s part of the Table Mountain National Park. The beach offers beautiful views of the coastline and here you can also view the African penguins in their natural environment – right on the beach.

If you want an introduction to penguins without spending cash on a ticket then you can head to the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town and visit the Two Oceans Aquarium at the famous V&A Waterfront. This impressive aquarium houses a few species of penguins which stay sheltered at all times as part of their conservation program and educational displays. The aquarium also offers links to educational websites, such as Vizstream, which offers an insight into penguin conservation strategies and the threats facing these adorable creatures.

The Two Oceans Aquarium also provides an intimate encounter with African Penguins – visitors can witness these birds being hand-fed twice daily for a phenomenal experience.

Whilst these encounters don’t offer an experience of observing wild African Penguins, it does serve as an educational journey for those interested in conservation efforts and viewing these gorgeous creatures in an environment away from potential predators.

If you’d rather not venture out into nature then make your way to Boulders Beach or the Two Oceans Aquarium to observe these animals in their artificial environment.
