Enjoying an Authentic Performance of Chopin in Warsaw’s Old Town – A Guide

If you’re planning a trip to Warsaw and are looking for an authentic cultural experience, then you might want to consider attending one of the concerts held in the city’s charming Old Town. Famous composer Frédéric Chopin is closely associated with Warsaw, and his works are the staples of many of the concerts held here. Here’s everything you need to know about Chopin concerts in Warsaw’s Old Town.

History of Chopin Concerts in Warsaw

Frédéric Chopin was born in Warsaw on 1 March 1810 and lived in the city until he was 20, after which he relocated to Paris. However, his music remains closely associated with his birth city – he produced most of his works whilst living in Warsaw. As such, many concerts in the city’s Old Town pay tribute to the composer’s works.

The Chopin concerts aren’t just held in the Old Town – they take place all over the city. The Polish National Philharmonic and the National Opera House, which are both located in the centre of town, host regular Chopin concerts as well. However, it’s the concerts held in the cobbled squares, beautiful churches and quaint alleys of the city’s Old Town that have become traditional, because this is where Chopin himself used to perform.

The Venues

One of the most popular venues for a Chopin concert is the Royal Lazienki Park. The Sunday afternoon Summer Chopin Concerts were instituted in the late 19th century, and they continue this very day. The concerts take place at the park’s picturesque monument from mid-May until early September, and over 100,000 people attend every year. Besides enjoying a live performance of some of Chopin’s most beloved works, attendees also get to marvel at the beautiful gardens of Warsaw’s largest park. Tickets for these concerts tend to sell out fast, so it’s recommended to get yours early in order to secure your place.

Other traditional venues for Chopin concerts are the Church of Marijackiej at Krakowskie Przedbiecie Street and St. Anne’s Church on Krakowskie Przedmiescie Street. The Church of Marijackiej is located within the boundaries of the Old Town and holds several concerts throughout the year, including on Sundays at noon and Sundays at 6 pm in summer months, as well as on Frédéric Chopin’s birthday (1 of March). Both classical and jazz performances are played here. As for St Anne’s Church, this small 19th century Roman Catholic chapel holds Frédéric Chopin’s mass every Sunday at noon between May and September. Tickets for both venues can be bought at the door or in advance from box offices at main streets within the bounds of the Old Town.

Concerts at Other Venues

Some concerts featuring Chopin’s works are also held outside of the Old Town. One such example is held every Wednesday evening from May to September at 7 pm at Wilanow Castle Park, one of Warsaw’s historic outdoor palaces. This outdoor concert is normally accompanied by a picnic and some drinks – making it the perfect outing for families and couples alike! Another popular venue is the Zamek Culture Centre which holds a short morning Chopin concert every Monday at 11 pm starting from late April until early November. Concerts are often accompanied by lectures on Chopin-related topics.

The “Chopin and His Europe’ festival welcomes over 170 musicians from around the world to take part each year. This three-week long festival (usually held in May) is divided into several “mini-festivals’ covering different music genres and styles associated with Europe’ culture over the years – from Baroque to Classic genres as well as those from more contemporary composers inspired by Chopin himself.
