History Of Detroit

The history of Detroit dates back to 1751, when Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac established the project as part of New France. France’s control of Detroit was eventually taken over by Great Britain as part of the Seven Years’ War in 1760, when Britain gained control of most of New France’s territories.

In 1796, the U.S took control of Detroit after being transferred from Britain in the Jay Treaty. This began the growth of Detroit’s population as more people came to the area to work in agricultural businesses, logging, and fur trading. By 1845, Detroit’s population had grown to over 20,000.

In 1896-1903, Henry Ford’s first Mass Produced Model T was manufactured in Detroit leading to decades of development as the automotive capital of America and many people relocating to the area from rural agricultural towns. This car also played an important role in transforming Detroit into one of America’s wealthiest cities. By 1950, the population had grown to 1.8 million people.

By the mid-1960’s however, due to decline in auto manufacturing jobs and along with the effects of white flight which saw some people leaving the city in fear of civil unrest taking place due to racial tensions during the civil rights movement, people began leaving Detroit at an increasing rate. This eventually led to population decline that is still felt today with Detroit’s current population sitting at around 672,000.
