In this guide, we will discuss everything you need to know when planning a visit to Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle in Koper.

History of Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle

Postojna Cave is one of Slovenia’s most iconic destinations and is considered as one of Europe’s largest caves systems. The cave was first discovered in the 18th century by Valvasor, a Carniolan polymath and a prominent historical figure in Slovenia. Since then, hundreds of thousands of people have flocked to the magnificent limestone caves each year making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in Slovenia. The almost 24 km-long cave system is home to many limestone formations such as stalagmites and stalactites. It also houses numerous species of animals such as the olm, an amphibious creature which is unique to Slovenia. Another nearby attraction is Predjama Castle, an impressive castle located on a cliff face, beneath the slopes of a partially-collapsed cave. Predjama Castle is the largest and most famous cave castle in Europe and is estimated to have been built in the 13th century. The castle is divided into various sections such as the courtyard, knight’s hall, vaulted hall and bedchamber. It stands as the witness of many historic events, primarily related to its remarkable owner, Erazm Lueger. While exploring the majestic castle, one can also experience the fascinating history of knights and courtly life, governance and military practices that were prominent in medieval times.

Exploring Postojna Cave is an experience unlike any other. The breathtaking views of the underground chambers and galleries, featuring a vast diversity of formations and creatures make for an unforgettable experience. The only way to explore Postojna is via a guided tour which introduces visitors to the limestone caves’ outstanding beauty, fauna and fungi. This tour lasts for about 90 minutes and consists of three parts- an exploration of the show cave, a visit to the underground Prohodnica Hall and a ride on the unique underground railway. At the beginning of the tour, visitors are taken through a mystical passage which reveals some of the most impressive formations of postojna. After descending 214 metres, visitors enter Prohodnica Hall where they can observe some remarkable features such as the Acoustic Hall, Sparkling Row and Pantheon Colonnade. Following this section of the tour, visitors are taken on the long and fascinating ride on the underground railway to admire Wall Fantasia, Calvary and Emperor’s Throne while listening to historical facts about Postojna Cave.

Exploring the castle’s interior walls reveals numerous items from centuries past such as paintings from Sir Lueger’s time to furniture from the 19th century. On entering Predjama, visitors can explore various sections such as the courtyard which displays artefacts from past eras including cannons, maces and armours. The Knight’s Hall is decorated with portraits of Lueger Family members while other sections such as the vaulted hall, bedchamber and kitchen display various items such as wooden bedframes, mid-19th century furniture and traditional outfits.
