How Old is the Great Pyramid of Giza?

The Great Pyramid of Giza, often referred to as the Pyramid of Khufu and sometimes known as the Pyramid of Cheops, is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the oldest architectural structure still standing. It is located on the Giza Plateau, near modern-day Cairo, Egypt. But how old is the Great Pyramid of Giza?

The Great Pyramid itself was built around 2560 BC, making it almost 4500 years old! It was constructed over twenty years during the reign of Pharaoh Khufu, who ascended to the throne of Egypt in 2589 BC. Built as a burial structure, the Great Pyramid served as Khufu’s monumental tomb intended to shield his body and possessions from potential grave robbers.

Khufu’s advisors are believed to have chosen the Giza Plateau as the ideal site for the Great Pyramid due to its high altitude, easy inland access and a perfect north–south orientation. The building materials used were most likely sandstone, as it is plentiful in Egypt, as well as limestone and granodiorite. The stones were taken from local quarries and dressed on-site before being dragged into place by workers hauling sledges or boats on rough tracks.

Today, the Great Pyramid is still the tallest pyramid in Egypt, standing at an impressive 147 metres high. While its original exterior was covered in smooth white limestone blocks which reflected sunlight, most of this has worn away now leaving a yellowish tinge from the underlying bedrock, some of which remains visible. Each side of its base is aligned almost perfectly with the four cardinal points and has an area of 5.3 acres.

The structure itself is still structurally sound but the original entrance is blocked and engineers have not been able to access some areas without causing damage. In addition, until recently, many parts of the interior were yet unexplored due to a stubborn hinge block that resisted all attempts to move it.

The Giza pyramid complex also includes several smaller pyramids – two were built for Khufu’s wives and three others for his children – as well as a mortuary temple and causeway leading towards them. The complex originally also included a pair of man-made boat pits, an indication that Khufu was originally buried in his boat.

While much of it remains a mystery, the Great Pyramid of Giza stands today as an awe-inspiring engineering marvel and a testament to the ingenuity and skill of ancient civilizations. Its age makes it even more remarkable; as History.com notes, “It has remained standing for thousands of years longer than contemporary architects would expect.” Its height has also never been matched by modern architects, though several have tried – which only adds to its aura of mystery and fascination.
