How to Experience the Best of Vienna in Three Days?

Vienna is a beautiful city full of culture, cuisine and history. Its beauty and culture should not be rushed, however, one could easily enjoy the best Vienna has to offer in just three days. In order to make sure you get the most out of your visit, careful planning and mapping out of your destination is key.

Day 1: Historic and Cultural Highlights

There is no better way to kick off your three-day exploration of this beautiful city than by visiting some of its most iconic cultural and historic sites. Start your day off at Schloss Schönbrunn – an Austrian Baroque palace that dates all the way back to the 1600s – which provides a gorgeous backdrop for the park that surrounds it. Then make your way over to the magnificent Hofburg Palace, built in the 1300s, which serves as one of the main centers of political power ever since the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Take some time to explore the impeccably manicured gardens and courtyards, as well as a tour through the Imperial Apartments, or the Silver Collection where many of the Hapsburg’s historic artifacts are kept. Make sure to take a break for lunch in one of the many cafés located in the area, then continue exploring by heading over to St. Stephen’s Cathedral, which is a classic example of late Gothic Architecture – just make sure to arrive early in order to beat the crowds.

Before heading back towards your accommodation for the day, make sure to visit some of the more contemporary exhibits at Vienna’s city museums, located within Leopold Museum. Follow up your day with dinner at one of Vienna’s iconic restaurants, serving up classic Viennese dishes like Sachertorte and Wienerschnitzel.

Day 2: Exploring Outside City Center

Start day two with a visit to Belvedere Palace – which is considered one of Vienna’s finest Baroque structures – and carefully walk through its gardens and palace grounds. You’ll then be able to admire masterpieces from the likes of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. However, make sure you get there early as usually just like on any other day, it will get quite crowded in the afternoon.

Afterwards, make your way to Augarten Park, located just outside of city center – a carefully manicured garden that makes up part of Vienna’s Imperial Gardens – where you can marvel at a variety of flower and animal sculptures, as well as a selection of historic buildings, and perhaps have a picnic along its well-maintained lawns.

From there make your way to Austria’s largest open-air market – the Naschmarkt – just east of city center, in order to explore its unique and ever-changing variety of goods from all around Austria, ranging from farm fresh produce, meats and even antiques, among other treasures. Once you’ve had your fill grab dinner in nearby China Town and enjoy some deliciously fresh Asian dishes.

Day 3: Shopping & Entertainment

Spend your last day in Vienna exploring some of its vibrant shopping centers, like Mariahilferstrasse or Graben and Kärntnerstraße – two pedestrian-friendly streets lined with one-of-a-kind boutiques that showcase both Austrian and international fashion designers. However don’t forget to take some time off to explore some of Vienna’s popular landmarks like Karlskirche – an impressive 18th century Baroque church towering above Vienna city center – or take time for some “cultural-window shopping’ by visiting iconic theaters like Burgtheater, Wiener Staatsoper, or Volkstheater.

In order to get more informed about all the things Vienna has to offer, you could find tips from locals on websites such as Vienna Unwrapped, that have detailed guides about all the must-see places for those looking for an authentic experience rather than just ticking off check marks on a checklist.

To wrap up your last day here in Vienna, be sure to indulge yourself in rich Viennese culture by taking in one of its many ballet performances which are held almost daily in one of Vienna’s many opera houses. Be sure to book tickets ahead as usually they tend to sell out very quickly and you wouldn’t want to miss seeing the beautifully designed costumes and sets that only Vienna’s classical music theater can offer!

Overall, there is a lot to be done in only three days while visiting Vienna – it is all about making efficient use of your time and strategizing ahead depending on what experiences you are most interested in trying out. But whether you’re into exploring museums or simply taking a stroll through one of Vienna’s famous parks – you’ll be sure to fall in love with this city!
