An Insider’s Guide to Cairo

Are you planning your Egypt in 10 days tour and wondering how to make the most of your time in Cairo? As a local, I’m excited to share a behind-the-scenes guide to some of my favorite places in the city. From hidden gems to local cuisine, cultural experiences, and off-the-beaten-path recommendations, this guide will take your trip to a whole new level!

Local Attractions

While the Pyramids of Giza and the Egyptian Museum are must-visit sites, there are plenty of lesser-known attractions that will make your trip even more memorable. Take a stroll in Al-Azhar Park, with its stunning views of the city, or visit the stunning Ibn Tulun mosque, one of the oldest and largest mosques in the world. For a unique experience, catch a moulid (religious festival) at one of Cairo’s many mosques, where locals come together to celebrate.

Dining Spots

Egyptian cuisine is a unique blend of flavors and spices from both Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cultures. Head to Felfela for authentic Egyptian dining, indulge in a kushari at Abou Tarek, or try a unique Egyptian twist on pizza at Pizza Masr. Don’t forget to try some local street food like foul or ta’ameya while exploring the street markets and bazaars. Pro tip: don’t be afraid to ask for extra chilli sauce!

Cultural Experiences

Cairo is full of vibrant cultural experiences, from traditional dance performances to ancient art galleries. Take a felucca (traditional wooden sailing boat) ride on the Nile at sunset or watch a performance at the Cairo Opera House. Visit Al-Azhar Park on the weekends for poetry readings and music performances by local artists. Don’t forget to indulge in some haggling at the traditional souks and bazaars to experience the local bargaining culture.

Local History

Cairo is steeped in history, and every corner holds a story waiting to be told. Visit the Hanging Church, an ancient Coptic Orthodox Church in Old Cairo, or the Saladin Citadel and Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha, with its stunning views of the city. Walk in the footsteps of ancient pharaohs at the Karnak Temple or dive deeper into the history of the Nile River at the Nile Museum. If you’re interested in more modern history, visit Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the 2011 revolution that changed the face of modern Egypt.

Off-the-Beaten-Path Suggestions

For a truly unique Cairo experience, take a hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings, a world-renowned Egyptian archaeological site. For a more laid-back activity, spend an afternoon at the Gezira Club, a private club that overlooks the Nile, with activities ranging from tennis to swimming. And if you’re a street art enthusiast, take a tour of the El Zahraa neighborhood, which features colorful murals and graffiti sprayed across its walls.

In conclusion, Cairo is a city full of unique attractions, unforgettable experiences, and delicious food. Use this insider’s guide to make the most out of your 10-day Egypt tour by exploring the hidden gems and experiencing the vibrant culture of Egypt.
