Hidden Gems: Discover Cairo’s Lesser-known Attractions

While the Pyramids of Giza and the Egyptian Museum are must-visit spots, let’s explore some hidden gems. The Al-Muizz Street in the Fatimid era city of Cairo is home to centuries-old mosques, museums, and cafes. On Fridays, join the locals at the Al-Azhar Mosque for the weekly prayer and explore the adjacent historic marketplace filled with books, spices, and souvenirs. Take an evening stroll along the Nile and visit the Tahrir Square, now a symbol of Egypt’s revolution.

Culinary Delights: Satisfy Your Taste Buds with Local Flavors

Egyptian cuisine has evolved over centuries, influenced by different cultures and landscapes. Try the classic Ful Medames, slow-cooked fava beans served with eggs, onions, and bread. The famous Koshari, a hearty mix of rice, pasta, lentils, chickpeas, topped with crispy fried onions, is a local street food favorite. Also, don’t miss the sweet delight known as Basbousa, a syrup-soaked cake made from semolina and coconut. Visit Felfela, an authentically Egyptian style restaurant with an array of dishes.

Cultural Experiences: Immerse Yourself in Cairo’s Traditions

Cairo is a center of Islamic and Coptic cultures. Head to the Khan El-Khalili bazaar, traditional market, for handmade crafts and textiles, visit the Al-Azhar Mosque and the Mosque of Ibn Tulun, and learn about Islamic culture and history. Also, walk through the charming narrow alleys of Coptic Cairo, relax in the beautiful churches, and explore the colorful street art. During Ramadan, join the locals in the traditional iftar meal a night outside the Tahrir Square.

Historical Anecdotes: Fascinating Stories from Cairo’s Past

Did you know that the famous Sphinx statue in Giza was only discovered in the 20th century? Or that the Hanging Church of Cairo is said to be built over the Holy Family’s Joseph’s workshop? Visit the Saladin Citadel, built in the 12th century, to learn about the rise of Muslim rule, and visit the Muhammad Ali Pasha Mosque, with its fascinating Ottoman architecture.

Unconventional Tips: Experience Cairo’s Undiscovered Charms

If you’re looking for an off-beat adventure, try a hot-air balloon ride in Luxor, head to the Red Sea for some world-class diving, or visit the nearby desert to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the pyramids.
