To help you plan your perfect day in Lisbon, here is a comprehensive guide to all the amazing places you can visit and activities you can do while spending just 24 hours in this beautiful city.

Visit Religeous & Historic Buildings

Lisbon has a wealth of history and culture waiting to be explored and there’s a plethora of religious and historic buildings you can visit during your one-day stay. Start the day by strolling around the Praça do Comércio, an iconic 18th century square located on the western edge of Lisbon’s old city center. Continue your walk by heading west to the oldest district of Lisbon, Alfama. This part of town is mainly known for its stunning views and winding cobblestone streets as it is perched on top of one of Lisbon’s seven hills. One of the most iconic churches in Lisbon resides in Alfama; the Sé Patriarcal de Lisboa cathedral, which dates back to 1147. Another great spot worth visiting is the Jerónimos Monastery, with its exuberant decoration in Manueline style, reflecting 16th century Portugal’s maritime influence and the Age of Discovery. Finally, you can head to the Castelo de São Jorge (St. George’s Castle), an ancient Moorish castle located on the highest hilltop in Lisbon. From up here, you can enjoy breathtaking views over Lisbon’s best landmarks and attractions.

Explore The City Center

After taking in the historical sights, head to Praça do Rossio, a huge intersection located in the center of Lisbon’s Baixa neighborhood. Have a stroll around Chiado, one of Lisbon’s most fashionable districts lined with terraced cafés and bookstores. Take a short trip on the elevator up to Bairro Alto, which is one of Lisbon’s trendiest nightlife spots with several bars and restaurants located around its narrow, cobblestoned streets. Don’t miss one of Lisbon’s best sights – the Elevador Santa Justa – on your way back to Rossio Square. This neo-Gothic wrought iron elevator tower was built at the end of 19th century for pedestrians to reach downtown Baixa from higher neighborhoods. This incredible structure was designed by Raoul Mesnel, Gustav Eiffel’s apprentice!

Walk Along The Coastline

Take a break from exploring Lisbon’s narrow and winding streets and head south to Madrid de los Austrias. Take a stroll along the Tagus riverbank or along Cais do Sodré, one of Lisbon’s most popular waterfront strips for locals. You can walk past the Praça do Comércio and pass by the lovely 25th April Bridge and then take in the magnificent views over the River Tagus and the beautiful waterside lined with bars and restaurants.

Visit Parques Eduardo Vii

Parque Eduardo VII is perhaps one of Lisbon’s most iconic parks. At 29 hectares, it is a massive garden located in Avenida da Liberdade district flanked by two marble crosses. This park is quite popular among both locals and visitors alike due to its many attractions such as the beautiful rose garden, fountains, ponds, lakes and groves. Parque Eduardo VII is also home to many green spaces, playgrounds for children, a café with outdoor seating and even an open-air theatre where regular concerts and other cultural activities take place during summer months.

Catch A Fascinating Sunset

As your 24-hour journey comes to an end, head towards Belém Tower at Parque de Belém for an absolutely mesmerizing view over the sunset. This monument marks the starting point of Portugal’s historic voyage during the Age of Discovery as explorers sailed across oceans in search of new lands. Here you can also find Centro Cultural de Belém (a cultural centre), Church Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and Torre de Belém (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

As you can see there are plenty of things you can do during just one day in Lisbon! The Portuguese capital is brimming with things to do, places to visit and activities that offer something for everyone. From historical monuments, stunning views over Tagus river, awe-inspiring sights, great nightlife spots and incredible experiences – you can explore all Lisbon has to offer in just 24 hours!
