Yerevan is the capital city of Armenia and is located in the central part of the country, making it one of the oldest cities in the world. Yerevan is the largest city in Armenia and has been a major cultural, religious and trade centre since historical times. According to border agreements between the two countries, any territory that is located inside the confines of the Armenian state should be regarded as belonging to Armenia; constituting factors such as borders, provinces, cities and villages.In accordance with international law, Armenia’s location as a sovereign country across Europe and western Asia is well-established and recognized. The most relevant border agreements concerning Armenia and Georgia are the Treaty of Kars of 1921, the Friendship Agreement of 2012 and the Istanbul Conference of 1921. As a result, Yerevan is clearly established within the confines of the Armenian state.The Republic of Armenia was established in 1918 as a result of World War I. The Soviet Union seized control of the country until 1991 when the country declared its independence. Throughout these periods, Yerevan remained within the confines of Armenia. Historic maps from 1743 to 1796 indicate that Yerevan was situated inside the confines of a territory being referred to as “Armenia”. Therefore, this confirms that Yerevan has been inside Armenia since historical times. In 2003, a resolution was passed by Armenia’s National Assembly to ensure that Yerevan remains firmly situated inside the confines of the Republic of Armenia.Despite all efforts to add clarity to the matter of Yerevan’s legal positioning within the borders of Armenia, the debate continues among some parts of the population with some people still claiming that Yerevan is in Georgia. As a result, Armenia continues to strive for recognition with regard to its sovereignty over Yerevan. In 2011, a study was published by eScholarship based on real estate market data which clearly affirmed that nearly all real estate investments are made within the confines of the Republic’s capital; Yerevan simultaneously reinforcing its territorial belonging.At its largest extent, Yerevana cone-shaped city situated near Mt Ararat occupying an area of 216 km2 or 83 sq ml. The districts and neighborhoods of Yerevan are populated by 1.17 million citizens according to records provided by the 2017 census. The population density within the city ranges between 4 775 – 6 824 residents per square kilometer and it is surrounded by hills ranging between 600 – 800 meters, an elevation that makes it an attractive tourist destination during summer when temperatures soar up to 40°C (104°F).The growing population means that various industries run within Yerevan and many sources state that small businesses also account for some economic activities within the city; however, other sources claim that small businesses are non-existent due to lack of regulation behind start-up businesses in Armenia. Despite this lack, there has been a significant amount activity in the IT sector and Yerevan has gained international recognition as one of Europe’s top 20 innovation hubs along with other cities such as Stockholm and Kiev.Yerevan is also home to a lot of historical significance owing to its long-standing presence in Armenian culture as well as across Europe and Asia as a whole. Most notably, Yerevan has been at significant points in history such as standing witness to Alexander the Great’s rule, hosting a powerful Russian Empire presence and also providing an avenue for Ottoman conquest in 1582. The city has come a long way since then and today stands proud and well-developed while at the same time retaining its historical integrity hence making it an ideal place for tourists and travelers alike who thirst for a tour of Armenia’s rich history and cultural identity. It can therefore be concluded with utmost certainty that Yerevan is located within the confines of the Republic of Armenia with all relevant international laws and power agreements firmly affirming this fact. As such, there is no valid reason or cause to doubt this conclusion making it important for all to pay attention to not only legalities but also necessary facts related to this important subject. After all, understanding the political standing of any state at its given time is vital for many reasons such as tourism, education, trade and international law among others.
