Jerusalem: Visit Bethlehem, Jericho, & Qasr al-Yahud in a Day

As one of the holiest cities in the world, Jerusalem is a must-visit destination for many travelers. It is also the gateway to some of the most important biblical sites in the region. This holy city is home to an incredible array of sites, including the Mount of Olives, Temple Mount, and Church of the Holy Sepulchre. But, if you’re planning on traveling to Israel and have just one day to explore, you might consider a trip to three must-see sites within Jerusalem—Bethlehem, Jericho, and Qasr al-Yahud.

About Bethlehem

Bethlehem is a small Palestinian city near Jerusalem and is located in an area which is contested between Israelis and Palestinians. It is of special importance to Christians as the town where Jesus was born. Bethlehem is an ancient city with fascinating historical sites and it is a center for Palestinian culture and heritage.

Many visitors who come to Bethlehem find their way to Manger Square and Church of the Nativity. The square, situated between the Church and Mosque of Omar, is a vibrant meeting point for locals and tourists alike. The ancient Church of the Nativity, built around 500 AD, is one of the oldest churches in the world and is the center of attention in Manger Square.

Travelers coming to Bethlehem also shouldn’t miss the Milk Grotto and Shepherd’s Field. The Milk Grotto, a small grotto that was said to be the place where Mary fed and nursed baby Jesus, has been a Christian pilgrimage site for centuries. The oldest layers of this chapel date back to 230 AD and show distinct Byzantine styles of architecture. Shepherds Field is a 7th century basilica and monastery that commemorates the location where Jesus was first visited by shepherds.

About Jericho

Jericho is known as the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world and the city of “salt” in Hebrew. It is located in Palestine near the Jordan River and has long been recognized as an oasis due to its abundant water supply and pleasant climate. Jericho is also home to many historical biblical ruins.

Tourists who visit Jericho can explore some of Palestine’s most impressive archaeological sites including Hisham’s Palace and Mount of Temptation Monastery. The Hisham’s Palace, located 8 km (5 mi) from Jericho, was built by the Umayyad Caliph Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik sometime between 724–743 AD. Today, you can explore extensive ruins of this once mighty palace. The Mount of Temptation Monastery can also be visited from Jericho. Here, you can go on by foot to visit a chapel that is said to have been used by Jesus for prayer.

About Qasr al-Yahud Baptismal Site

Qasr al-Yahud is the largest baptizing area along the River Jordan. The site has been around since ancient times and it was at this point that John the Baptist famously baptized Jesus Christ. Qasr al-Yahud has long been an important site for Christian pilgrimage and it attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Qasr al-Yahud itself is rather small—only seven acres in total—and consists of two major sites: a synagogue and a Greek Orthodox church. The church was built in 1895 with traditional Armenian flourishes and the synagogue dates back to 500 BCE. Aside from these religious sites, visitors will find a number of ruins that have remained untouched for thousands of years. Qasr al-Yahud is certainly one of the most remarkable places in Jerusalem to visit.

Planning a trip to these three holy spots in Jerusalem can be challenging due to the relative proximity of each site and the understandable desire to make efficient use of your time in this incredible city. As any traveler will tell you, these packages often offer a whole lot more than just seeing three different sites.
