Journey into the Tunisian Desert: A 4-Day Tour from Djerba

If you’re looking for an unforgettable adventure, then join us on a 4-day tour through the Tunisian desert. This tour offers a unique opportunity to meet the locals, discover iconic Star Wars filming locations, and experience exhilarating outdoor activities. Here’s how to plan your journey into the Tunisian desert.

Day 1: Tataouine and Ksar Ouled Soltane

On the first day of the tour, we’ll hit the road and head towards Tataouine, an ancient Berber city. Along the way, we’ll take in the stunning natural scenery of the salt lake of Chahbania. Once we arrive in Tataouine, we’ll visit the local market where you can taste the delicious local pastry cornes de gazelle and explore the different stalls.

But that’s not all. We’ll also visit two iconic Star Wars shooting locations – Ksar Ouled Soltane and Ksar Hadada – and take in the stunning architecture and scenery. Ksar Ouled Soltane is a fortified granary that was built in the 15th century and served as a filming location for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Ksar Hadada is a fortified village that was built in the 17th century and featured in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.

After our tour of Ksar Ouled Soltane and Ksar Hadada, we’ll explore the charming Berber village of Chenini with a Berber autochthonous local guide who will take us through the village to discover its different components like the mosque and cottage. Finally, we’ll have dinner and sleep at an 18th-century Berber cottage that has been converted for modern use.

Day 2: Tataouine to Ksar Ghilane

On the second day of the tour, we’ll head towards Ksar Ghilane, a beautiful oasis in the heart of the Tunisian desert. Along the way, we’ll stop at the Roman water cisterns of Ghoumrassen and visit the abandoned village of Ouled Soltane. We’ll also have lunch in the picturesque village of Douiret.

Once we arrive in Ksar Ghilane, we’ll have the opportunity to swim in the hot spring and relax in the oasis. We’ll also take a camel ride to explore the beautiful scenery and visit the Berber camps in the area. After a long day of exploration, we’ll have dinner and spend the night under the stars in a traditional Bedouin tent.

Day 3: Ksar Ghilane to Tozeur

On the third day of the tour, we’ll head towards Tozeur, a beautiful oasis city in southwestern Tunisia. Along the way, we’ll visit the Chebika waterfall and explore the abandoned village of Tamerza, which was destroyed by flooding in 1969. We’ll also have lunch in the mountain oasis of Midèlt.

Once we arrive in Tozeur, we’ll explore the breathtaking oasis city and visit the Dar Chrait Museum, which showcases the traditional architecture, crafts, and culture of the region. We’ll also have dinner and spend the night in a traditional Tozeur hotel.

Day 4: Tozeur to Djerba

On the final day of the tour, we’ll head back to Djerba, stopping at the Chott El Jerid salt flats along the way. This is a vast expanse of dried-up salt lakes with a stark beauty that is both eerie and captivating. We’ll also stop in the town of Matmata to visit the troglodyte caves and explore the local handicraft market.

Once we arrive back in Djerba, we’ll say our goodbyes and part ways, with memories of our Tunisian desert adventure that will last a lifetime.

While Houmt Souk, the island’s biggest town, and El Ghriba Synagogue are popular attractions, Djerba has many lesser-known spots worth a visit. Visit the Guellala Museum to learn about the island’s pottery-making tradition. The crocodile farm (Djerba Explore Park) is a fascinating place to visit; you can observe crocodiles up close and even take part in feeding them. A visit to the weekly outdoor market (Souk Al Jumaa) is an enchanting experience – vendors display clothing, jewelry, and handicrafts while the smell of street food fills the air.

Dining Spots: Savor Djerba’s Traditional Cuisine

Djerba is renowned for its culinary delights. From inviting scent of grilled fish wafting from the seafront restaurants to the hand-crafted brik pastries, Djerba’s cuisine is steeped in tradition. For an excellent traditional meal, visit the iconic restaurant, Firma. Enjoy harissa-spiced soup, spicy grilled fish, and couscous served with a variety of veggies. For an unusual twist, try the chakchouka and order a side of the island’s famed fig jam. A visit to Djerba’s many street vendors is also a must for trying out local snacks and light bites.

Cultural Experiences: Soak Up Djerba’s Rich Culture

Djerba’s vibrant culture is expressed through its art, music, and traditions. If you’re visiting in July, don’t miss the El Teboulba Festival that celebrates Djerbian folk music, dances, and colorful costumes. Djerba’s history is tied to its strategic location between the Mediterranean and the Sahara Desert. The island has been inhabited for over 2,000 years and has seen the influence of Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, and Turks.
