History Of Porto

They were followed by the Romans, who founded the city of Portus Cale in the 1st century CE. The Romans built fortifications, a forum, and an aqueduct to supply the city with water. Portus Cale was an important trading center and port during this time, as it was located on the trade routes between Rome and Britain.

In the 5th century CE, the Visigoths conquered Portus Cale and renamed it Portucale. In the 8th century, the Moors invaded and took control of the city. Under Moorish rule, Portucale prospered and was known for its wealth and culture. The city was also home to a large Jewish population during this time.

In 1143, the Christian armies of Portugal led by Afonso Henriques conquered Portucale from the Moors and renamed it Porto. Afonso Henriques declared himself king of Portugal, and Porto became the country’s first capital. The city’s importance grew during this time as it was a major trading port, particularly for wine and other goods from Portugal’s colonies in Africa and Asia.

During the Age of Discovery in the 15th and 16th centuries, Porto flourished as an important trading port. The city was also home to many famous explorers, including Vasco da Gama and Ferdinand Magellan. In 1703, after a devastating earthquake, King John V ordered a major rebuilding program that resulted in many of Porto’s most beautiful buildings and monuments being constructed.
