The Best Tourist Spots to Visit in Austin

A trip to Austin can provide many different types of experiences. From its vibrant culinary scene, unique historical sites and exciting nightlife, tourists who visit the city find plenty to keep them entertained. Have you ever been to Austin? If not, read on to discover some of the best tourist spots that the city has to offer, regardless of your personal tastes.

Mount Bonnell

One of the most iconic locations in the outskirts of Austin is Mount Bonnell. This amazing view point offers captivating views of the surrounding hills and the glittering waters of the Colorado River. The site is a popular spot for visitors and locals alike. To get to Mount Bonnell, visitors can park in the Mount Bonnell’s parking lot, located off of City Park Road, and walk up the path to the top. Mount Bonnell is open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset.

The Capitol Building

The main site at downtown Austin is the historic Capitol Building and its grounds, which were opened in 1888. The Capitol Building and its grounds contain several monuments to popular figures from the history of the state. Everywhere you look within the Capitol grounds, you find something unique and interesting, from the impressive Victory Columns to longhorned steer statues. The Capitol building is open seven days a week and offers visitors a wide range of tourist activities, ranging from guided tours Monday through Friday and special events such as music concerts, movies and lectures.

Barton Creek Trailhead

Just south of downtown Austin lies Barton Creek, which gives way to an extensive trail system perfect for outdoor activities for all levels of skill. Starting at the lower levels of Barton Creek, you can follow the trial down and enjoy delicate wildflowers, trees and wildlife such as beavers, turtles, bluejays and jackrabbits. The trail has several access points along its route: from Creasy Lane, Hill View Trail and Green Loop Trail in the eastern part, Twin Buttes Trail, Canyon View Park and Trails End Park in the Western part. Only some sections of the trail remain open for mountain biking and horse riding; these are East Trailhead at Vargas Road and West Trailhead in Twin Buttes Trails.

Rainey Street

Who comes to Austin without a taste of its vibrant nightlife? Rainey Street is one of the hotpots for nightlife enthusiasts. Located just south of downtown in a picturesque street by Lady Bird Lake, Rainey Street houses a variety of bars and pubs within walking distance, each offering their own unique take on entertainment and drinks. Two popular bars on Rainey Street are Bangers and Little Woodrow’s Hedge House, each offering different types of entertainment; while the former offers an outdoor beer garden serving local beers on tap, the latter offers its own unique variety of craft cocktails accompanied by live sports streaming.

Graffiti Park at Castle Hill

Another spot for lovers of art is Graffiti Park at Castle Hill. This unique park is located next to Castle Hill on 11th street and is built on an abandoned stone quarry on two levels. For two decades street artists have been creating graffiti murals on this park’s walls which now feature a wide variety of hand-painted works from more than a dozen artists. Visitors are free to explore this vibrant place and enjoy its lush foliage before admiring the view over Rainey Street toward Lady Bird Lake.
