The Ultimate Oxford Breakfast Guide: A Cambridge Student’s Take On the Best Breakfast Spots
Oxford offers an unrivalled selection of breakfast spots for anyone with an appetite for the most important meal of the day. From hip, modern cafes to traditional British pubs, there’s a breakfast spot for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a full English fry-up or a healthy bowl of granola, Oxford has it all, and more. In this guide, I’ll be sharing some of the best breakfast spots Oxford has to offer and giving my honest, personal opinion on each one. So here goes….
The Lauriston
Situated in an old Victorian building in the heart of Oxford, The Lauriston serves classic British pub breakfasts to both locals and visitors. Popular dishes include an “Ultimate Fry Up’, made with a combination of classics such as bacon, eggs, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes and sausages. The Lauriston also offers light and healthy options such as Greek yogurt and seasonal berries, fresh from the nearby Oxfordshire farms.
My opinion: The Lauriston is a great spot for those seeking a traditional British breakfast experience in a homely and cosy pub setting. With generous portions, classic dishes and great prices, it’s definitely worth a visit.
Mahabelles Bakery
Mahabelles is one of Oxford’s most famous bakeries and has been a local favourite since it opened its doors back in 2013. With a focus on artisanal baking methods, the bakery offers a variety of freshly-baked pastries, cakes, scones and breads. For those looking for a lighter start to the day, Mahabelles also serves breakfast salads, with ingredients such as feta cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, olives and fresh herbs.
My opinion: If you’re after something a bit different for breakfast in Oxford, Mahabelles Bakery is the place to be. Their fresh-baked pastries are simply divine and their salads are really light and delicious. Highly recommended!
The House of Hastings
The House of Hastings is a modern café located in the centre of Oxford, offering up something a little different to the classic British breakfast options on offer elsewhere in the city. Dishes range from French toast with berry compote and crème fraiche to poached eggs on rye bread with smoky sauce. The House of Hastings also offers up some interesting vegan options too.
My opinion: The House of Hastings has something for everyone when it comes to breakfast and their food is cooked to perfection. It’s the perfect spot if you’re after something different and more health-conscious than the typical fry-up!
The Reef
The Reef is one of Oxford’s oldest café’s and is well known for its unbeatable breakfast menu. With its classic French-influenced dishes – from avocados on sourdough toast to Pain Perdu – and generous portions, it is no wonder that The Reef has been awarded the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for outstanding customer service year after year.
My opinion: The Reef is an excellent option for those wanting something more than just your run-of-the-mill English breakfast but still with a classic feel. Prices are very reasonable too!
The Oxford Brunch Club
Last but definitely not least, The Oxford Brunch Club is a welcome addition to the already thriving café culture in Oxford. Not many people know this, but The Oxford Brunch Club serves up delicious brunches seven days a week – from Brioche French Toast to smashed avo on sourdough toast – as well as fresh juices and delicious cakes to finish off your perfect brunch experience.
My opinion: The Oxford Brunch Club is my absolute favourite for weekend brunch – it never fails to deliver! From the food to the friendly atmosphere, I would highly recommend a visit if you’re looking for something special for brunch in Oxford.
