Local Attractions that Only Valencians Know

If you are looking for something off the beaten path, just step inside the narrow alleys and hidden corners of Valencia’s Old Town. Lose yourself in the colorful maze of streets, plazas, and medieval buildings that will take you on a time-hopping journey. Visit the Valencian Museum of Ethnology, which showcases local history and traditions, or the Valencian Institute of Modern Art, a hub of contemporary art. Catch a glimpse of daily life in the Mercado Central, the city’s bustling marketplace, or get a bird’s eye view of Valencia from the bell tower of the Cathedral. These hidden gems are sure to make your trip unforgettable.

The Taste of Valencia’s Cuisine

Valencia is a food lover’s paradise, where gastronomy is an art form. The traditional dish of Valencia is paella, a rice-based dish that is cooked with meat, seafood, and vegetables. To taste the best paella in Valencia, head to La Pepica, a restaurant opened since 1898, or try El Racó del Arròs, where the chef reinvents the classic dish with new flavors. You can also savor other Valencian delights, such as esgarraet, a blend of salted cod, roasted pepper, onion, and olive oil, or horchata, a refreshing drink made from tiger nuts. Every dish has a story that is rooted in Valencia’s history and culture, and your taste buds are sure to be delighted.

Experiencing Valencia’s Culture

Valencia is a city where culture and tradition are celebrated with colorful festivals and events throughout the year. One must-see event is the Las Fallas festival, held in March, where the streets are ruled by giant papier-mache sculptures that are later burned. Another festival is La Tomatina, a battle of tomatoes that takes place in the town of Buñol, and draws people from all over the world. For fans of the arts, the Palau de la Musica, Valencia’s premier concert hall, offers performances ranging from classical to modern. In Valencia, every corner of the city is a canvas for artistic expression.

Valencia’s Fascinating History

Valencia is steeped in a history that spans over thousands of years. One of the most intriguing historical sites to visit is the Silk Exchange, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that represents Valencia’s period as the silk capital of Europe. Another site is the City of Arts and Sciences, a stunning complex of futuristic buildings that is a nod to Valencia’s avant-garde spirit. Valencia has a rich tapestry of history, and every historical landmark is a testament to it.

Off-the-Beaten-Path Suggestions

If you crave a unique and unforgettable experience, Valencia has much to offer. One activity that is worth trying is a cooking class with a local chef, where you can learn to make paella or other traditional dishes in an intimate and authentic setting. For adventure lovers, take a hot air balloon ride over the orange groves’ fields and fly over the city. Alternatively, rent a bike from one of Valencia’s many bike shops, and explore the Turia Gardens, a beautiful park that was once a riverbed in the middle of the city. Valencia is full of surprises waiting to be discovered.

Valencia is a city that is as diverse and vibrant as its pubs and bars. Whether you are a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor, this insider’s guide has showcased the very best Valencia has to offer.
