What are the best things to do in Canberra?
Canberra is the capital city of Australia and is a great place to visit if you are looking for plenty of activities to get up to. With its blend of old and new architecture, lakes, mountains, galleries and museums, there are enough choices to keep you busy for your visit. Whether you are looking for outdoor activities that take full advantage of the lovely weather, or indoor attractions to explore, there is something for everyone. Here are some of the top things to do in Canberra to make sure you get the most out of your visit.
Visit Parliament House
What better way to start your trip around Canberra than with a visit to Parliament House? Hosting both the Senate and the House of Representatives, this large white building with plenty of columns dominates the central landscaping of the city, and should not be missed. Enjoy a guided tour of the building, which includes the old chambers, banquet halls, and rooftop terrace which offers spectacular views over Mount Ainslie and Canberra’s surrounding districts. Finish off your visit with a meal in one of the many cafes in Old Parliament House, where you can watch all the hustle and bustle of government staff doing their work.
Explore the National Gallery
Canberra’s National Gallery is one of the must-see sights when visiting the city. This gallery holds hundreds of works of art, both old and new, and all of them have been collected from around Australia and overseas, making it one of the most diverse collections you’ll see. Some of the highlights include Aboriginal art from across Australia, contemporary work from established artists, and the Turner from the Tate exhibition. Many art classes can be taken part in at the gallery too, so why not brush up on your painting skills whilst you’re here!
Go Cruising on Lake Burley Griffin
At the heart of Canberra is Lake Burley Griffin and here you will find plenty of ways to enjoy it. Hop aboard one of the lake cruises which go from Keswick to Regatta Point, with plenty of commentary along the way about the key landmarks, including Anzac Parade and Commonwealth Avenue. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled too, as you may spot some untamed wildlife along the way! Alternatively, why not hire a kayak or canoe and explore this calm waters on your own?
Check out the Australian War Memorial
For a more somber experience, visit the Australian War Memorial. This beautiful building holds many important artifacts from wars throughout Australia’s history, with most exhibits honoring those who have died in service. The galleries are thoughtfully curated with plenty of audio-visual elements to enhance your understanding. It is also possible to take a guided tour here, or plan your own through their website awm.gov.au, where you can also book tickets for special exhibitions too.
A Walk Around Kingston
No trip to Canberra would be complete without an afternoon in Kingston. This neighbourhood is well known for its art galleries, with many dedicated to modern abstract art. You can also find some great restaurants here too which range from cheap grab-and-go spots to high end chef restaurants. Grab an ice cream from Patissez as you meander past buildings built in the 1950s and old British style pubs, before heading up the street to Old Bus Depot Markets for some local shopping!
Take a trip out of town
If you’re looking for even more things to do in Canberra then why not venture out of town? Head south to Braidwood for a trip through rural bushland scenery; east to Bungendore for some wineries and antique shops; north to Hall for some great Australian bushwalking trails; or west for some mountain biking trails close to Mount Coree. No trip would be complete without a scenic trip during your stay either – Canberra has plenty of natural beauty surrounding it so make sure you take some time to explore it! Whatever activity or attraction you’re looking for then Canberra has something for every type of traveller. From wide open space to modern art galleries and heaps of history there is something exciting around every corner. Have fun exploring this great city!
