What Are the Best Things to Do in Düsseldorf?

Düsseldorf is the capital of the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and a popular tourist destination. It has something for everyone, from its beautiful parks to its world-class museums, delicious food to rich cultural attractions. So if you’re planning a trip to Düsseldorf, you’ll find plenty of activities to fill your days. Here are some of the best things to do in Düsseldorf.

Visit the Old Town

The historic old town of Altstadt is one of the main attractions in Düsseldorf. A stroll through cobblestone streets lined withold-fashioned pubs, boutiques, and centuries-old buildings will transport you back in time. One of the oldest neighborhoods in the City, the Old Town was once the seat of the Counts of Berg, who ruled Düsseldorf for several centuries. Here you’ll find some of the city’s most popular places, including pub-lined streets like Immermannstraße and Schlösserstraße, and landmarks such as the 15th-century church St.-Lambertus-Kirche and the iconic Oberkasseler Bridge.

Explore Rheinpark

The sprawling green Rheinpark is an oasis of calm in bustling Düsseldorf. Located just south of the old town, the park stretches along the banks of the Rhine and features both natural settings and cultural attractions, such as bike and boat rentals, sports fields, regular concerts and performances, and more. It also has multiple playgrounds and sprawling green spaces perfect for picnics and outdoor activities. The park is a favorite destination in Düsseldorf and a great way to spend an afternoon or a day exploring nature close to downtown.

The Königsallee

The Königsallee (known locally as the Kö) is a promenade that runs between two elegant boulevards in the heart of Düsseldorf. It’s known for its fancy end of luxury stores, but also for its beautiful old trees and flowerbeds, inviting benches and cafés, statues and artwork, and peaceful waterways lined with ducks and swans. It’s a perfect spot for window shopping, people watching, or if you’re feeling daring, a spot of shopping.

Visit Media Harbour

Media Harbour is the vibrant cultural and entertainment center of Düsseldorf, home to museums and galleries, cafés and restaurants, concert halls and theaters. It was built on the redeveloped industrial harbor on the banks of the Rhine, which once served as one of Düsseldorf’s most important ports. Today it has been transformed into a hub for the arts, culture, and nightlife with attractions such as the Im Schauspielhaus Theater, Oberkasseler Gallery, the Kunstpalast Museum, Spiegel Bar, Kö-Bogen Shopping Centre, and many more.

Check Out CCD Congress

The CCD Congress is one of Europe’s largest congress centers located right in the heart of Düsseldorf. Every year it draws crowds of more than 1 million visitors to its state-of-the-art facilities spread across several huge hangars located on the banks of the Rhine. It offers plenty of entertainment activities including concerts, exhibitions, shows and more. A recent addition is a public roof terrace with spectacular views of the city skyline and riverfront area.

Take a Cruise on Rhine

Düsseldorf’s position on the banks of Rhine River makes it a great destination for boat rides and sightseeing cruises. One of the most popular things to do in Düsseldorf is to take a Rhine cruise on one of the many boats that depart from the old harbour. If you want an even better view of Düsseldorf’s sky-line, you can take an aerial roadtrip over Germany’s most beautiful river with a flight over the Rhine Valley on a hot air balloon or helicopter. Enjoy spectacular aerial views as you drift above quaint towns, fabulous castles, steep vineyards and wooded forests below.

An Insider’s Guide to Düsseldorf: Discover the Best Things to Do

As a local, I am excited to share my insider’s guide to the best things to do in Düsseldorf. This city is full of surprises, and there’s always something new to discover. From hidden gems to must-see attractions, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your trip.

Local Attractions

While Düsseldorf is known for its famous landmarks, such as the Rheinturm and the Altstadt (Old Town), there are also plenty of lesser-known attractions worth exploring. One of my favorite places in the city is the MedienHafen, an industrial district turned modern marvel with beautiful architecture and trendy bars. Another spot that’s off the beaten path is the Kaiserswerth Castle Ruins. It’s a little further out from the city center but well worth the journey!

Dining Spots

Düsseldorf is known for its hearty and delicious local cuisine. The city is famous for its Altbier, a dark beer that pairs perfectly with local dishes like Himmel un Ääd (a mix of mashed potatoes, fried onions, and apples) and Rheinischer Sauerbraten (marinated beef). If you’re looking for authentic cuisine, head to Brauerei Schumacher – a traditional brewery serving delicious local specialties since 1838. Another hidden gem is the Frühstücksladen, a cozy café that serves a delicious breakfast menu all day, every day.

Cultural Experiences

Düsseldorf is a cultural hub that’s proud of its heritage and traditions. The city hosts several festivals throughout the year, including the famous Karneval and Japan Day, which draws crowds from all over the world. Art lovers will appreciate the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, a collection of contemporary artworks, and the Museum Kunstpalast, which houses 400 years of European art. If you’re a music fan, check out the local jazz scene at the Jazzschmiede – a cozy and authentic jazz club that features talented local artists.

Local History

Düsseldorf has a rich history that’s intertwined with art, fashion, and commerce. One of my favorite stories is about the famous artist Joseph Beuys, who grew up in the city and studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. He’s known for his avant-garde art and contributions to the Fluxus movement. Another fascinating historical site is the Stadttor, the only remaining fortification gate from the 13th century that once encircled the city.

Off-the-Beaten-Path Suggestions

For a truly unique experience, head to the Rheinpark Golzheim, where you can take in breathtaking views of the Rhine River while lounging in a giant hammock. Or, visit the Königsallee, a luxury shopping boulevard that’s known for its high-end boutiques and designer stores. And if you’re looking for a more peaceful experience, visit the Hofgarten, a tranquil park in the heart of the city that’s perfect for a picnic or a leisurely stroll.

I hope this insider’s guide has inspired you to explore Düsseldorf from a new perspective. From the lesser-known attractions to the famous landmarks, this city has endless surprises waiting to be discovered. Get ready to fall in love with Düsseldorf, and don’t forget to share your experiences with your friends!
