Calgary – one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities is well known for its amazing landscapes, impressive museums and galleries, underrated nightlife and most importantly, a thriving food scene. Visitors to Calgary should take the time to explore all the city has to offer, especially its one-of-a-kind food markets. Whether you’re on the hunt for farm fresh local produce, succulent seafood, or specialty confectionaries, an array of food markets both indoor and outdoor await your gastronomic adventure.

The Calgary Farmers’ Market (CFM) is an indoor public market that strives to provide the Calgary community access to fresh produce from local farmers. CFM has upheld a commitment to provide quality and selection through their farmers since changing locations in 2010. The farmers’ market is open year round from 10 am-5 pm on Saturdays, as well as 9 am-5 pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. With over 300 vendors selling an array of items ranging from fresh produce to handmade pasta, Calgary’s original indoor farmers market has something to please all taste buds.

Another fantastic food shopping spot in Calgary is the largest outdoor farmers market – the Crossroads Market. Open April through October, the Crossroad’s provides visitors with a truly unique farmers market experience with its multiple ramshackle buildings filled with baked goods and fresh farm produce, mazes of crowd-pleasing plant varieties, and artisanal crafters. Besides the bounty of fresh produce there is also the Beyond Lettuce Garden centre and Alberta’s largest bushel barn boasting thousands of bushels of fresh grains, cereals, beans and flours. Of course, no visit to Crossroads Market is complete without sampling the delectable treats from their incredible food vendors (the market’s crêpery has rave reviews!)

Those looking for something a bit closer to downtown should check out The Calgary Central Farmers Market located off 11 Avenue SW adjacent to Grey Eagle Casino and Bingo. Open year round from 10 am-5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, the Calgary Central Farmers Market stocks a lot of the same classic farmers market items like fresh produce, eggs and honey but also offers up some delicious homemade tacos, pad Thai and other global cuisines, giving you an opportunity to sample some true global flavors without having to travel far away from Calgary.
