What attractions are there to visit in Amsterdam?

Amsterdam is one of the most important and exciting cities in Europe. For centuries, it has been the cultural centre of Northern Europe, attracting some of the world’s greatest artists. Amsterdam is famous for its canals, the Anne Frank House, and its vibrant nightlife. It is also home to some incredible attractions that visitors from all over the world come to explore. In this article, we will take a look at some of the key attractions that visitors should not miss when enjoying a stay in Amsterdam.

The Canals of Amsterdam

One of the key attractions of Amsterdam are its iconic canals. Amsterdam is home to more than 150 kilometres of canals; many of them lined with grand old townhouses. There are more than 1500 bridges spanning the canals, connecting the various neighbourhoods of the city. Exploring the canals on foot or by boat allows you to understand just what it is that gives Amsterdam its charm.

The city’s canals were originally built in the 17th century to protect the city from flooding. Today they form a stunning backdrop to the city and have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites since 2010. Hop onto a canal cruise and explore what life is like on the water in Amsterdam. Alternatively, take the famous crosses, such as Prinsengracht, Herengracht and Keizersgracht, for a stroll and discover why Amsterdam is often referred to as “The Venice of the North’.

Historic Downtown: The Museum Quarter

Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter is an area bursting with culture, which can be easily explored on foot. The most famous museum here is the Rijksmuseum, which houses an extensive collection of works from some of the country’s greatest masters such as Rembrandt and Vermeer. This museum alone could take up an entire day of your visit to Amsterdam. Other museums in the area are worth exploring too and include the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art and the Van Gogh Museum.

The city centre is also home to many other attractions such as Dam Square, the heart of Amsterdam, just minutes away from the Royal Palace. Nearby there is also Begijnhof, an old courtyard dating back to the Middle Ages which is home to small wooden houses that have been home to residents of Amsterdam for centuries.

The Flower Market

Amsterdam is home to a wonderful daily flower market known as Bloemenmarkt (Flower Market). Don’t be fooled by its name alone; this unique floating market also has a wide selection of souvenirs, tulip bulbs and much more to explore. Pick yourself up a unique gift on your visit and enjoy a leisurely stroll around the market, admiring all of the colourful blooms from clumps of tulips to vibrant wild flowers.

Anne Frank House

No trip to Amsterdam would be complete without a visit to the Anne Frank House. This museum was once home to Anne Frank and her family during World War II, and their room where they hid has been preserved in its authentically original state. As you walk around this historic property, you will understand first-hand why Anne felt such a strong connection to this place and The Diary of Anne Frank, which has been translated into 67 languages.

Explore Nightlife Around Rembrandtplein

When night falls, Amsterdam comes alive with its vibrant nightlife and bustling bars and clubs. Rembrandtplein, or Rembrandt Square, is considered one of the main hubs for nightlife in Amsterdam and can be reached by foot or by tram. It houses some of Amsterdam’s trendiest clubs such as Club Air and Club Church, as well as bars serving artisan beers and world-class cocktails.
