What is a Bath?

Baths are essential components of modern-day bathrooms and offer an important method of personal hygiene and cleaning. Baths can be used for a range of activities such as bathing, showering, and soaking in a hot tub. There are a variety of different types of baths, from different styles, shapes, and materials. In this guide, we will cover the basics of what a bath is, what the different type of baths are, the types of materials used to make baths, how to maintain and clean your bath, and the benefits of having one.

What is a Bath?

A bath is a type of vessel used for immersing the body in hot or cold water. It can vary in shape and design and is used for cleansing, refreshing and relaxation. Baths can be fitted stand-alone or as part of a bathroom suite. While most people use baths for showering or bathing, they can also be used as a spa or hot tub, providing comfort and active hydrotherapy to sore muscles and joints.

Types of Baths:

There are different types of baths available for sale to suit your bathroom size, requirements, usage and design. Depending on your budget, personal needs, and the size of your bathroom, there are many different types from which to choose.

Soaking Tubs:

Soaking tubs are rectangular, slipper, or drop-in tubs which are usually larger than traditional baths and deep enough for full immersion. These tubs come in an array of materials, from enameled steel to cast iron to acrylic. Soaking tubs provide a luxurious and relaxing experience, perfect for unwinding at the end of the day.

Whirlpool Tubs:

Whirlpool tubs are similar to soaking tubs but contain strategically placed jets to create powerful currents which massage the body. Whirlpool baths can be made using different materials such as fiberglass, acrylic, or cast iron. As well as providing massage-like sensations to your muscles and joints, they can also provide relief from migraines and other pains caused by built up stress and anxiety.

Walk-in Tubs:

Walk-in tubs are designed for those who cannot access standard baths due to mobility issues and are often fitted with additional features such an angled seat for comfort and easy access. Some models have swing doors for effortless entry and exit whilst others contain therapeutic hydrotherapy jets that gently massage the body with air bubbles.

Corner Tubs:

Corner baths are unique tubs designed to fit in and make the best use of off-corner walls in bathrooms. They offer the same features and materials of other types or baths but rather than being rectangular or square shape they are shaped like an acute triangle. Unlike other models, corner baths are usually entered from the short end rather than the long end.

Types of Materials Used for Baths:

For baths to be able to withstand water exposure over an extended amount of time, they need to be constructed with durable materials that can stand up to the elements. Some examples of bath materials include:

  • Porcelain or Cast Iron:
  • Porcelain or cast iron is often used in bath designs as they are both very durable materials which won’t rust or corrode over time. These materials also provide excellent insulation meaning your bath will remain warmer for longer periods of time. Although porcelain and cast iron baths are more expensive than other types, they provide a more luxurious bathing experience with increased heat retention and sound absorption qualities.

  • Acrylic:
  • Acrylic is a popular material used in bath design due to its light weight yet strong and durable structure. Acrylic is easy to maintain as it can be easily scrubbed down with mild detergent but must be dried after each use to prevent water damage which can cause it to break down faster.

  • Fiberglass:
  • Fiberglass is a lightweight and efficient material used to make baths that come in a variety of sizes, designs, and colors. Fiberglass is also resistant to fading, cracking or chipping under normal wear. However, it can be damaged by harsh chemicals so special care is needed when cleaning them.

Maintaining and Cleaning Your Bath:

It is important to maintain your bath correctly in order to ensure it looks good, lasts longer and remains safe to use. Cleaning your bath regularly is important as dirt and grime build up quickly and can cause damage if not removed properly. To clean your bath you should use a mild cleaner such as diluted vinegar or baking soda as these won’t harm the material your bath is made from. Pay more attention to areas such as around faucets or handles as these can collect more dirt and grime if left unattended. Always dry off the surface after each use as leaving water sitting on the surface can cause build up of bacteria or mould over time. Also avoid using harsh chemicals such as chlorine bleach on your bathtub as this could damage the material over time.

Benefits of Having a Bath:

A bath offers numerous benefits for homeowners which many people don’t realise. Not only does it provide a pleasant way of refreshing and relaxing but it also helps reduce mental health issues such as stress, anxiety, fatigue and depression. Hot baths have been scientifically proven to raise serotonin levels in your brain which helps relax the mind, body and soul from the stresses of everyday life.

Using water in the form of a hot or warm bath has also been associated with relieving physical pain caused by arthritis or sore muscles due to its natural healing properties which relax tense muscles while hydrating the skin creating healthier, softer looking skin with regular use. Additionally, there are also a host of additional benefits to using a bath such as using it for hydrotherapy which helps relieve joint pain and stiffness by using hot water jets to massage the body while loosening any build up of stress around those areas.

Conclusion:

A bathtub is an essential bathroom appliance providing both functional bathing capabilities as well as a place where you can relax and soothe both mind and body through hydrotherapy. Bathtubs come in all shapes and sizes as well as in different materials making it easy for you to find one perfect your lifestyle needs. It’s important to maintain your bathtub regularly by cleaning regularly and avoiding harsh chemicals on surfaces to protect it from damage or fading over time.Sobathsumo offers a detailed guide on everything you need to know about maintaining your bathtub correctly for long lasting results
