What Is Basel? – The City at the Heart of Switzerland

Basel, often referred to as the city at the heart of Switzerland, is a vibrant university and microcosm, located at the foot of the northern Alps at the intersection of the Swiss, German and French borders. It’s historic home to numerous art and culture attractions, as well as playing host to numerous international activities, beginning with its world-renowned Art Basel and Art Basel Miami Beach takes place every December.Basel is also the home of Basel University, which is the oldest university in Switzerland and one of the oldest universities in Europe, founded in 1460. It currently has around 12,000 students, but contains a student population that is almost three times as large during semester months due to exchange students coming from all over Europe and beyond. Considered the gateway between three different countries, Basel is diverse both in its mix of culture, food, architecture and language. Officially, both French and German are spoken in the canton of Basel-City, and many people also speak English due to its international presence.Basel is also a world class center of Swiss banking, also known as the headquarters of large pharmaceutical companies like Novartis and Syngenta. Basel is the “Peter Port” of Switzerland, meaning it is near the busy shipping ports of both Hamburg and Amsterdam, so if you’re looking to gain access to trade hubs like these, then Basel is a great choice.

The main mode of transportation within Basel city limits is the trams, which run on a network of two parallel tram lines. Basel also has an airport, located ten minutes from downtown Basel by car. The city atmosphere is relaxed and with its close proximity to other European countries, weekend trips are always within reach. With a population of around 200,000 people it has enough hustle and bustle while still maintaining that small town feel. The city is home to many renowned theaters and music venues, so people looking for concerts can find exactly what they are looking for. In addition there are plenty of museums as well as a wide variety of restaurants for enjoying food from different cultures.

One of Basel’s most iconic attractions is its Rhine Riverfront promenade which offers wonderful views of Basel’s Old Town. In summer months, people gather for free concerts in Barfüsserplatz and Sommercasino offering an eclectic mix of entertainment ranging from jazz to pop music.
