It was occupied during both world wars and was decimated during the Air Raids of 1943 known as Operation Gomorrah. The Economy of Hamburg

The Port of Hamburg is the second-largest port in Europe and accounts for a significant portion of the local economy. It lies along the River Elbe, which is part of the economic lifeblood of northern Europe. Every day thousands of shipping vessels bring goods from around the world into the port, where they are then re-exported to destinations across the globe. The port is also home to one of Europe’s largest container terminals and is a major hub for air cargo worldwide.
