What is the Entertainment Scene Like in Belfast?

Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland, and it’s the second-largest city on the island of Ireland. Located along the River Lagan, the vibrant destination is renowned for its friendly people, beautiful landscapes, and abundant cultural attractions. But it’s also home to an eclectic entertainment scene. Whether you’re looking to have fun at a nightclub or tune into some live music, Belfast is a great place to be.

Belfast Nightlife

Belfast is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Northern Ireland, and its nightlife is especially inviting. The city center is the main hub for nightlife, filled with pubs and clubs that cater to just about every taste. There are plenty of spots to check out, including stylish bars, traditional Irish pubs, and world-renowned nightclubs.

One of the most popular clubs in Belfast is Thompson’s Garage. Located in a former tram depot on Donegall Street, it’s one of the oldest music venues in the city and features two dance floors and a terrace bar. It hosts frequent live acts and DJs, often playing everything from dance music to pop and rock. The Boys’ Club near Queen’s University is also well-known for its varied musical line-up, including EDM, house, and drum & bass. Ollie’s nightclub is located in a historic train shed and attracts partygoers with its two floors of sound and light.

The Lavery’s Bar on Bradbury Place is ideal if you’re looking for traditional Irish pubs. Established in 1877, Lavery’s has an interesting history and regularly hosts live bands throughout the week. McHugh’s Bar & Restaurant on Queen Street offers a more laidback atmosphere, complete with nightly entertainment and a rustic interior design. Robinson’s Bar and The Duke of York are two other pubs that have been around for over a century.

Belfast Music Scene

Belfast may be known for its great nightlife, but it also has a vibrant music scene. The city is renowned for being an important part of Britain and Ireland’s popular music history. Local artists from Belfast have had global success, including Van Morrison and Snow Patrol. From classical to contemporary, there are plenty of musical events taking place throughout the year in this northern Irish capital.

Each summer Belfast welcomes one of the largest music festivals in the UK—the Belsonic Music Festival. The event features an eclectic mix of performances from established international acts as well as up-and-coming stars. Previous line-ups have included artists such as David Guetta, Calvin Harris, LCD Soundsystem, Stereophonics, Foals, Kasabian, Florence and the Machine, Two Door Cinema Club, Bastille and Rudimental.

If you’re looking for something more intimate, there are plenty of music bars, pubs and small venues throughout the city. The Oh Yeah Music Centre is located in the Cathedral Quarter and showcases many local acts, letting audiences enjoy some world-class live music in an intimate atmosphere. The venue also features galleries and workshops for aspiring musicians. The Black Box is another notable venue located in a former stocking factory up the street from Queen’s University. Each December Belfast hosts its Christmas Tradfest Festival, which celebrates Irish music, dance and food.

Theatre Venues & Cinemas

For those who prefer a more theatrical experience, there are some great theatres in Belfast. One of the best is the Grand Opera House on Great Victoria Street. Established in 1895, the venue has been home to opera, ballet, and pantomime performances throughout its history. It’s also been featured in movies like City of Ember and Tomb Raider—The Cradle of Life.

The Ulster Hall on Bedford Street opened in 1862 and features plays, operas, concerts and exhibitions throughout the year. For modern shows, try The Lyric Theatre located near Queen’s Quay; it’s a theatre space constructed from a former warehouse and chalk works at River Lagan and hosts a range of productions from drama plays to pantomimes and stand-up comedy shows.

If you want to catch a movie on the big screen there are plenty of cinemas around town. The Odyssey Cinemas on Queen’s Quay offer 11 screens with IMAX 3D capabilities as well as special events such as Silent Disco cinema nights and LGBT screenings each month. There are also several Odeon Cinemas—one near Victoria Square Shopping Centre place and another inside The Boulevard Shopping Centre on Boucher Road—offering moviegoers a selection of Hollywood blockbusters as well as smaller independent films in luxurious seating arrangements.

As you can see, there’s no shortage of events taking place in Belfast regardless of your entertainment preference. Whether you’re looking for an intimate evening show or just an excuse to dance all night long with friends, this booming city has something for everyone.
