What is the Highest Point in Western Australia?

The highest point in Western Australia is located on the boundary between the Shire of Ashburton and the Shire of East Pilbara. This peak is known as Mount Meharry, and it stands at 1,287 metres above sea level. This point is one of the most isolated points in Western Australia, and the nearest towns with any appreciable population are Tom Price and Paraburdoo, located 100 kilometres away.

The peak is named after James Andrew Ranald (Ran) Meharry, a former superintendent of the Nasho cattle station located in the area. It is also known by the local Aboriginal people as Queeringy, with queeringy being a word in the Kariyarra language that translates to tallest mountain.

Mount Meharry is the highest point in an area of the Pilbara known as the MacDonnell Ranges, which form part of the Hamersley Range. The ranges are made up of quartzite, a type of sedimentary rock that is 1000 million years old. This type of rock is renowned for its hardness and ability to form high ridges. The peak of Mount Meharry was created by faulting and the folding of rocks, which explains why the mountain is so high.

Although Mount Meharry is the highest point in Western Australia, there are other mountains that are close in height. These include Mt Welcome (1,286m), Mt Francis (1,284m), and Mt Castor (1,270m).

Mount Meharry is an extremely remote place and there are no marked trails to the peak. Although it is somehow possible to trek up to the summit, it should only be done by experienced trekkers, as there are a number of hazards to consider. These include snakes, dangerous cliffs, thick bushland and extreme heat.

If you do have the skills to attempt to ascend Mount Meharry, a map from Traxmaps can be used to show the route up and down the mountain.

The highest peak in Western Australia is Mount Meharry, located near in the Pilbara Ranges near Tom Price and Paraburdoo. Although it can be hiked to with certain precautions, it should mainly be enjoyed from afar as it’s a dangerous environment that should only be experienced by experienced trekkers.
