What is the history behind Sofia?

Sofia is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria and a cultural, economic, and educational center of Southeastern Europe. Located at the foot of the Vitosha Mountain in the western part of Bulgaria, Sofia has been an important city throughout its long and tumultuous history.

Sofia was originally a Thracian settlement called Serdica, which was occupied by the Romans in 29 BC. Romans later rebuilt the city and renamed it Triaditza. A Slavic settlement name Serdica arose following the invasion of Bulgars in the 7th century. In 809 Serdica became part of Bulgaria and was known as Sredets or Sredetz until modern time.

In 1382, Sofia was occupied by the Ottoman Turks as part of their taxation and military campaigns. The city of Sofia was eventually freed from Ottoman rule in 1878 following the Russo-Turkish War. Sofia became a part of the newly formed Kingdom of Bulgaria, and was declared its capital in 1879. The city underwent a period of rapid development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and many of its landmarks date to this period.

During the First World War, Sofia was occupied by German troops and was only freed by the Bulgarian Army in 1918. The city witnessed significant population growth throughout this time due to the influx of refugees from Ottoman regions. From 1920 until 1944, Sofia saw further growth and development under the rule of Tsar Boris III. Following World War II, Sofia was proclaimed the capital of the socialist People’s Republic of Bulgaria in 1946 as well as the official residence of the leader of the Bulgarian Communist Party, Todor Zhivkov.

In 1989, Bulgaria shifted back to a market economy and embraced democracy following the fall of communism throughout Eastern Europe. The end of Communism marked an era of transition for Sofia, resulting in major political, economic, and social changes. Today, Sofia is the nation’s major economic center, a hub for business and education and home to numerous universities and research institutions. In 2008, Sofia was recognized by the European Union as a “city for science” for its contributions to scientific research and advanced education.
