What Is the History of Banbridge?

Banbridge, a town located within the district of Armagh, Northern Ireland, dates back to 1610. It was founded by Sir Annesley Culme, who was an English lawyer, judge and politician, who created a bridge so people could access local farms more easily. The bridge combined the town’s two main districts, Ballyvally and Banbridge.The name Banbridge originates from the Irish word “Beannbric’ which means “view bridge’. This view bridge was created to connect two towns in that region- Ballyvally and Banbridge. Other than this estate, Sir Annesley founded a settlement which encompassed two districts. In 1762, the settlement was developed and Promenade Square was established by John Armstrong as a market square which had a Classical Arch made highly in 1768. At the same time Inns and taverns were built to offer hospitality to travelers and traders who frequented the market square.By 1790 the development of the Banbridge region had exponentially increased with the involvement of various landowners in the region. One of those landowners was William Tennant who built New Ballyvally House in 1792 and later Amblebrook House in 1833. The 19th century saw great change in the development of the region. Several mills are built as well as laces and linen factories which helped to fuel Banbridge’s economy and make it less of an outpost and more of a true town. The Outlet River played a major role in this development as it unceasingly provided water and energy to many of the sites and factories in the area. The 20th century saw the development of many businesses in the region such as motorcar dealers, tobacco manufacturers, watchmakers and many more businesses that contributed to Banbridge’s local economy. The Linen Hall served as a place for local events, providing entertainment from concerts to boxing matches which were extremely popular in the town. The 1930s saw an explosion in production and employment at Banbridge as it became a hub for many major industries such as textiles, electrical goods and engineering products. At this point, Banbridge had already become a hub for motor car dealerships and national flights departing from nearby RAF Ternhill. In 1946, Banbridge received electricity through a new power station, which transformed local industry and modernized transport in the area. Today, while Banbridge is much less factory-based than it once was that laid the groundwork for its economic powerhouse today, with innovative companies such as Listdev UK, Belfast-based architectural firm Virtual Planit and mobile app developer Magma Digital Limited making their home here.Banbridge also offers some great historical attractions, such as St Patrick’s Church of Ireland which was built in 1725and Belvoir Park Forest Park, which includes 165 acres of beautiful woodlands and gardens. Banbridge is very well connected via road, rail and air transport nowadays. Belfast International Airport is located just 30 miles away while Dublin Airport is only 65 miles away – perfect for those who need to stay connected while on vacation or business trips alike. With easy access to major cities such as Belfast and Dublin by car or train it’s easy to see why so many people are choosing Banbridge as their home.
