What is the History of Cabo San Lucas?

With its stunning beaches and breathtaking views, the Mexican city of Cabo San Lucas remains one of the country’s most popular tourist spots. But what is the fascinating story behind the coastal city and why has it gained such recognition over the years? In this article we will take a brief look at the history of Cabo San Lucas, back to its origins and trace its path to becoming one of Mexico’s major vacation destinations.

First Inhabitants

The first human activity in the area that is now Cabo San Lucas began more than 10000 years ago. Numerous archaeological artifacts have been found in the area, mostly from the Cochimí, a Nomadic tribe known to have lived in and around the region. Evidence suggests that the area was used as a trading and communications hub between nearby coastal towns and fishing villages.

Spanish Arrival & Development

Cabo San Lucas was first noted in Spanish accounts of 1533, by Captain Francisco de Ulloa (or Ulloa). He documented that the area held three Native American tribes. Pressured by Spanish conquistadors during the 16th century, the Cochimí abandoned their reserve at the Cape of San Lucas and moved southwards. The modern history of Cabo San Lucas can be traced back to a group of Jesuit missionaries and explorers who explored the Baja California Peninsula in 1730. As a result, a mission was built in 1734 in what is now the city of San José del Cabo. The two cities of San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas were connected by road for the first time in 1938 but even then, both locations were small fishing villages with few permanent inhabitants. Despite its gradual growth, both areas were virtually untouched by tourism until the 1970s aerial exploration led by explorer Jacques Cousteau revealed the beauty of the two cities. After that discovery, land developers started construction on the first resorts and villas that started bringing in waves of tourists. With time, Cabo San Lucas became renowned as a luxurious tourist hotspot on the peninsula.

Modern Developments

Today’s Cabo San Lucas is now a major commercial and tourist destination on the Baja California Peninsula. In 1997 it made world headlines when it was greatly damaged by Hurricane Lidia, but its resilient spirit and quickness to rebuild have earned it its current status which includes several major hotels, condominiums and resorts drawing in tourists from across the globe.
