What is the Red Light District of Amsterdam?

The Red Light District of Amsterdam is an infamous area of the city that is known for its adult entertainment, legal prostitution, and large concentration of cannabis coffeeshops. Located in the old city center, the area is also known as De Wallen, which literally translates to “The Walls”. While the district is famous around the world for its adult entertainment, the area is well known for more than just its risqué offerings. It’s also a popular tourist destination, with its colorful streets, canal-side eateries, and centuries-old architecture.

History of the Red Light District

The original Red Light District was established in the 14th century when fishing boats would dock near what is now Oudezijds Voorburgwal. The association with prostitution began in the late 16th century, when sailors and explorers returning from long journeys needed to “unwind”, and prostitution sprung up in response. During the 1600s, prostitution was seen as the last resort for impoverished women with no other source of income. Much like today, prostitution was considered a vice, and was heavily regulated in an attempt to mitigate its spread.

One of the oldest rules governing prostitution was that it must take place “behind closed curtains”. This rule was intended to contain the trade and prevent its spread across the city centre. Previous to this rule, prostitutes would solicit clients in broad daylight on Dam Square and throughout the city. The passage of time saw prostitutes formally containing their activities to the current Red Light District, resulting in today’s well-known concentration of adult entertainment venues.

A more recent addition to Red Light District regulations has been the requirement that prostitutes must register themselves in an effort to ensure worker safety. All workers must possess a valid license that indicates that they are over 18 years of age and are clear of any sexually transmitted diseases.

What’s to See and Do in the Red Light District?

Those visiting Amsterdam’s Red Light District will find a wide range of activities, from sightseeing and a relaxed pub crawl to a wild night out spent exploring “The Walls”. Here are some of the best things to do while visiting:

Take a walk around town

The streets of the Red Light District are always bustling with people and lined with historic buildings. Automobile traffic is prohibited nearly everywhere except Damrak Street, so visitors are free to wander around, exploring canal-side streets, old-fashioned shops, eateries, cafes, and countless pubs.

Visit one of Amsterdam’s most iconic museums

The Red Light District is also home to some of Amsterdam’s oldest and most renowned museums, such as the Hollandsche Schouwburg (Holland’s Theatre) and The Museum of Prostitution.

Start your night out at one of the local pubs

No visit to Amsterdam’s Red Light District would be complete without a pub crawl. Whether you’re looking for a traditional Dutch pub or a more lively night club, you’ll be sure to find exactly what you’re looking for here.

Experience Amsterdam’s notorious coffee shops

Cannabis coffeeshops have been an integral part of Amsterdam’s RLD since the 1970s. There are dozens of coffeeshops located all across “The Walls”, each offering a unique selection of cannabis products.

Go on a guided tour

For those looking for an in-depth look into Amsterdam’s Red Light District, taking a guided tour is your best bet. Many tour companies offer walking tours through “The Walls”, giving visitors a chance to learn about the area’s centuries old history and unique culture.

Safety in Amsterdam’s Red Light District

Amsterdam’s Red Light District is generally safe to explore during the day and at night; however, visitors should always be aware of their personal safety when exploring any unfamiliar area alone. Pickpocketing is common in this part of town and opportunistic criminals may try to take advantage of tourists who appear inexperienced or disoriented. To avoid falling victim to theft, it’s wise to always be aware of your surroundings, remain alert and sober, keep small amounts of money on hand, and rely on organized tours if you are concerned about safety.

My Opinion About The Red Light District

As a frequent visitor to Amsterdam’s Red Light District myself, I can attest that it is an interesting and sometimes enlightening experience. Today’s RLD has more than just sex workers operating from red-lit windows; there are numerous coffeeshops selling cannabis products, traditionally-Dutch pubs along the canals, and so much more to explore. It can be off-putting for those who don’t want to encounter these types of services but it’s actually an eye-opening opportunity for people from all walks of life who want to learn more about this ancient district hidden away within Amsterdam’s city centre. It’s no secret that many people come away from their visits with mixed feelings due to the negative connotations associated with prostitution; however I believe that by educating ourselves we are able to see the positive elements found in this unique neighborhood.

For those seeking a unique sightseeing experience in Amsterdam, I highly recommend taking a guided tour through the Red Light District or visiting it yourself with a group of friends late at night. To get the most out of your visit I recommend completing your journey by checking out one of Amsterdam’s most iconic activities; an exploration tour of the red light district by night on foot! If you’re feeling daring enough you can book tickets on a 2-hour Nightcrawlers Tour, which provides knowledgeable insight into the area’s fascinating history as well as a safe environment for exploration (expect tales of past vices and affairs!). Booking one of these tours will reward you with undiscovered learning experiences that can’t be found outside of this infamous part of town!
