What is Torun and why is it so Important?

Then in 1793, after successfully driving out Prussian forces, King Stanislaus II brought the city under Polish authority. In 1945 Torun became legendary for Mayor Dabrowska who sheltered over 1900 Jewish people from being sent to Auschwitz in his home. He was recognized for his courage in 1996 by Yad Vashem, a Holocaust remembrance organization, as one of its Righteous Among the Nations.
