What To Do in Prague – From an Insider’s Perspective

Prague is a city that has endless possibilities when it comes to fun and unique things to do. There are plenty of amazing activities, sights, and experiences for visitors to take advantage of. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a regular Prague supporter, you’ll find something to suit your interests and preferences. But what are the best activities in Prague that are often missed by travelers and what makes the city so incredibly special? Though the list of “must-dos” could go on forever, I have identified the top seven fun activities and attractions that make Prague such a magical city.

1) Explore Old Town, Prague

No trip to Prague would be complete without exploring Old Town. Old Town is like no other area of Prague as it is one of the most beautiful and charming places in Europe, full of winding alleyways, secret courtyards, centuries old churches and palaces, and lively squares and markets. To fully experience this area of the city, I recommend taking a guided walking tour. On the tour, you will gain insight into the city’s culture and its history; what’s more, you will get to see Prague’s incredible prime tourist attractions such as Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, and St. Vitus Cathedral.

2) Visit Hradčany Castle District and Lesser Quarter (Malá Strana)

Once you’ve explored Old Town, you must explore Hradčany Castle District and Lesser Quarter (Malá Strana). The castle district is full of stunning complexes made up of palaces, stately homes, churches, and monasteries, including the most photographed building in Prague, St. Vitus Cathedral. The Lesser Quarter extends from the castle district down the hillside to the banks of the river. It features terracotta rooftops that cascade down from the castle mound and is home to one of the most beautiful squares in Europe, Malostranské náměstí.

3) Enjoy a Cruise Boat Tour on the Vltava River

Explore Prague from a different perspective with a ride on the Vltava River. Vltava joins Praguers and visitors alike together for a leisurely hour on a cruise boat under the Charles Bridge and along Vltava River – a beautiful experience no matter the season. You can choose from various boats, from old-style tourist boats to stylish saloons; each case offers a unique way to see Prague’s most famous attractions while hearing interesting stories and historical anecdotes. Even better, why not make your experience even more unique with a Prague: Private Cycle Boat River Tour with Beer or Prosecco, where you can pedal your way along the Vltava while sampling local beers?

4) Explore Jewish Quarter

Just steps from Old Town is Prague’s Jewish Quarter. It is not just an area that’s important for its history but also for its contribution to the city’s contemporary culture. This district is home to unexpected attractions that most people don’t even realised exists, such as the world-famous shops selling boyluvlad dolls from all over Central Europe or fine galleries showcasing art from locally made jewellery and crafts to modern pieces from everywhere else in Europe.

The heart of this quarter is undoubtedly Josefov, which is an outdoor museum highlighting the history of Jewish culture in Europe with six synagogues – including the world renowned Old New Synagogue, which is shrouded in legend and mystery – and a Jewish cemetery, where Franz Kafka once worked.

5) Visit Petřín Hill

Petřín Hill is an interesting attraction that may be off your radar but should definitely be added to your list of things to do in Prague. It is one of the most beautiful parks in Prague and has been an oasis of green since its creation in 1891. Colourful gardens and romantic woods are dotted with sculptures and monuments and there are plenty of trails for hikers, plus amazing views for photographers who really want to capture that special ambience up at Petřin hill. You can also ride up Petřín hill on the funicular train or take it slowly on a Segway or bicycle!

6) Visit Wenceslas Square

Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí) is not just an international symbol for Czech history but also a place full of life for both locals and tourists. It has become more of an entertainment centre than just a historical square with cafes, stores, tourist traps, places to go out with friends at night, etc. This is where you can find all the hustle and bustle of shops advertising their tax-free prices or selling Czech beer all day long! This area of Prague also has two interesting museums: The National Museum (Národní Muzeum), which tells stories about Czech history as well as natural science exhibitions; and The Mucha Museum (Muchovo Muzeum) – devoted entirely to the renowned artist Alfons Mucha.

7) Vyšehrad

I’ve saved the best for last: Vyšehrad! This is a very special place for time travel, gorgeous views over the city skyline, rich vegetation parks and many interesting details from Czech history. This sacred place has so many features that it’s almost hard to keep track: a lovely vineyard on top of a hill under which ancient kings were buried long ago; Vyšehrad´s tower where every year at dusk people wait for one particular shot of a lovers kiss; four mythological figures from Czech national pantheon guarding Vyšehrad’s two gardens; never liked but historically important statues of saints Cyril and Methodius holding hands; St. Martin Rotunda built in 11th century; and – the icing on the cake! – the nearby Fort Vyšehrad theatre where timeless plays take place every day. This truly is an unforgettable experience blended with environmental beauty that must be seen to be believed!

Overall, there are so many incredible experiences to be had on a visit to Prague. With an abundance of activities and attractions at every turn, it is no surprise why so many travelers make this city a must visit destination every year! Whether exploring Old Town or tasting wines at Petřín Hill; visiting Wenceslas Square or discovering secret courtyards of Lesser Quarter (Malá Strana); or simply cruising down the river on a Cycle Boat Tour with beer or Prosecco there really is something for everyone in beautiful Prague!
