About Chapultepec Castle

As one of the most iconic landmarks in Mexico City, Chapultepec Castle dominates the landscape of the city’s majestic skyline. It stands on top of a hill which overlooks the city and is framed by lush green forests making it all the more striking. As you walk through Chapultepec’s green turf and explore its ancient structures, you’ll get a sense of what life was like when the castle was home to a host of powerful Mexican rulers including Maximilian I and Porfirio Díaz.

History of Chapultepec Castle

The hill on which Chapultepec Castle stands known as the Hill of the Grasshopper (Chapultepec), is mentioned in some Aztec documents which date back to 1324. It’s thought that here there was still a small Aztec settlement when the Spanish arrived in 1521.

In 1785 King Carlos IV gave permission for the construction of Chapultepec Castle as a pleasure palace for his son Maximilian I. The castle was extended and modified by several subsequent rulers, including Porfirio Díaz who used it for state functions between 1880 and 1910.

During the Mexican–American War from 1846–1848, U.S. forces used Chapultepec as their headquarters while they laid siege to Mexico City. In September 1847, it came under attack by American troops who are said to have had overwhelmingly superior numbers against the defenders but were beaten back in a heroic defence lasting until 10 o’clock in the morning when U.S. forces finally breached the gates. The heroes have since become famous throughout Mexico and the castle has been renamed Castillo de los Niños Héroes (“Castle of the Child Heroes”) in their honour.

Since 1939, Chapultepec Castle has been home to the world-class National History Museum whose exhibits include Pre-Hispanic pieces from throughout Mesoamerica, notable works from colonial-era from all over New Spain, and artwork from 19th-century Mexico as well as artifacts from Mexico’s rich cultural heritage.
