What to Know about the Attractions in Key West?

The Florida Keys form an archipelago on the southeastern end of the United States of America. Made up of more than 1700 small islands, the keys stretch over 180 miles from Key Largo to Key West – the westernmost island in the Keys. Key West is a charming city full of attractions, history and culture. Residents and tourists alike come to experience the unique vibe of this island town, which is steeped in legends and lore. If you’re looking to experience some of the best of what Key West has to offer, you’ll want to know a few things about the attractions in Key West.

Dry Tortugas National Park

Dry Tortugas National Park is located about 70 miles northwest of Key West. The park is made up of seven small islands featuring some of the most pristine beaches in the area, as well as spectacular coral reef and vast seagrasses. The main attraction of Dry Tortugas is Fort Jefferson, a massive masonry fort dating back to the mid 1800s. The fort is surrounded by lagoons and canals, making it an ideal spot for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. There are also boat tours that provide visitors with the chance to experience some of Dry Tortugas’ incredible wildlife and nature, such as sea turtles, seabirds, and manatees.

The Ernest Hemingway House and Museum

The Ernest Hemingway House and Museum is a must-see destination for book and literary lovers and is among one of the most popular attractions in Key West. The house was built in the early 1890s by Hemingway’s parents and was inhabited by Ernest Hemingway and his family from 1931-1940. The house is filled with artifacts from Hemingway’s life, as well as photographs and other memorabilia from his travels. Visitors can also explore the museum’s grounds, which feature lush gardens, a swimming pool, a tennis court, and trails for running and biking.

Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory

The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory is a unique attraction that provides visitors with an up-close look at some of nature’s most beautiful creatures. The conservatory features more than 50 species of butterflies from around the world living amongst lush tropical plants, birds, turtles, and a waterfall. Visitors can spend time admiring the butterflies in their natural environment or explore the onsite museum store, which offers souvenirs and educational materials about butterflies. The conservatory also offers guided tours for those who want to learn more about their butterfly neighbors.

The Historic Seaport District

The Historic Seaport District of Key West is one of the most vibrant areas of the city. Located just steps away from the Key West Bight Marina, the district is filled with many shops and restaurants offering everything from fresh seafood caught from local waters to souvenirs that capture Key West’s unique spirit. On any given day, visitors can explore a variety of art galleries, visit boutique stores, or simply stroll along the waterfront. The Historic Seaport District also plays host to many festivals and events throughout the year that are centered on art, music, food, culture, and more.

Southernmost Point Marker

The Southernmost Point Marker is an iconic landmark in Key West, claiming the title of the southernmost point in continental United States. It is symbolized by a large buoy that stands on the corner at Whitehead Street & South Streets near Key West Harbor. Although there’s no real evidence to prove it, many believe it to be true because of its picturesque location and its colorful history. But regardless of whether or not it is actually the southernmost point in the United States, its indisputable charm makes it a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike.

Key West Shipwreck Museum

The Key West Shipwreck Museum offers visitors a look into a part of Key West’s history that is almost as old as the city itself. Located in historic Mallory Square, the Museum houses artifacts salvaged from some of the many shipwrecks that have occurred off the island’s coast over the past two centuries. In addition to artifacts, guests can also explore interactive displays and models that showcase Key West’s long maritime history, as well as maritime legends such as Clipper ships and pirate vessels.

Mallory Square & Sunset Celebration

Mallory Square is one of Key West’s liveliest spots, featuring unique shops, galleries, restaurants, and other leisurely activities along its waterfront dockside setting. The square takes on an even more vibrant atmosphere at sunset when locals and tourists gather for what has become known as the Mallory Square Sunset Celebration. Circus performers light up the night sky with their spectacular antics as live music fills up the air with a fun-filled atmosphere found nowhere else. There are many attractions in Key West that make it one of Florida’s premier destinations for residents and tourists alike. With so much to do and see, it may be difficult to decide which attractions to make sure to experience on your next trip down to this little island at the tip of Florida’s southernmost fringe.
