A Breakfast Guide for Reykjavik

Reykjavik is the most populous city in Iceland and is known for its spectacular landscapes and stunning outdoor experiences. Last year it was even named as a UNESCO City of Literature, so visitors to Reykjavik are sure to find plenty to explore and enjoy. One of the best experiences to be had in Reykjavik is its wonderful selection of breakfast spots. Below we will look at some of the best places to get your morning meal, while exploring the Icelandic capital.

Klapparstigur 38

Klapparstigur 38 is a classic Icelandic café that offers a modern twist on traditional Icelandic dishes. Located in the heart of downtown Reykjavik, this café serves up a wide selection of classic breakfast dishes as well as some fusion options. The breakfast menu includes hearty omelets, freshly baked pastries, and some delicious sweet treats like skyr and pancakes. There is also a healthy selection of sandwiches, salads and soups for those looking for something a bit lighter. For those looking for something a bit more exotic, there is also Icelandic smoked fish, reindeer meat and even skyr parfaits to enjoy. There is no doubt that Klapparstigur 38 is a great place to start your day in Reykjavik.

My personal opinion on Klapparstigur 38 is that it is definitely worth a visit. The staff are all really friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is laid back but still quite lively. The food is delicious and there is definitely something for everyone. It is also great for those looking for a light breakfast or early lunch, as the menu offers a wide selection.

Sandholt Reykjavik

Sandholt Reykjavik is one of the city’s landmark bakeries and has been around since 1969. Located in the heart of the city near the main shopping streets, this bakery offers up a wide selection of freshly baked goods. On top of their wonderful range of breads, pastries and cakes, Sandholt Reykjavik also has a great selection of traditional breakfast items like cereals, smoked salmon and even Icelandic yogurt with seasonal fruit.

My personal opinion on Sandholt Reykjavik is that it is definitely worth a visit. The breads and pastries are all really fresh and delicious, and it is the perfect place to stop in on your way to explore the city. The atmosphere is cozy and homey and it isn’t too touristy either. Plus, there are usually lots of people nearby who can help you pick out your breakfast order.

Laugarbakki Bakery

The Laugarbakki Bakery in Reykjavik is a fantastic destination for those looking for something different for breakfast. This small bakery has been making breads, pastries, cakes and other goodies since 1958 and offers visitors a truly unique culinary experience. On top of keeping their traditional recipes alive, this bakery has also embraced modern baking techniques and their offerings range from sweet treats like croissants and buns to savory delights like traditional Icelandic flat breads and smoked salmon sandwiches.

My personal opinion on Laugarbakki Bakery is that it is definitely worth a visit. The atmosphere at this bakery really transports you back in time, with all of the original recipes still being kept alive throughout generations of ownership. The goods baked here are all really delicious and unique, so I highly recommend stopping by this bakery if you’re in town.

Braud & Co

Braud & Co is one of the newest cafes to grace the Reykjavik food scene, but it is already proving to be one of the most popular breakfast spots in town. Serving up high-quality specialty coffee as well as light dishes like sandwiches, salads, soups and pastries, this café offers something for everyone who visits. The café has high ceilings that make it feel open and spacious and its location near the waterfront provide for lovely views of the city skyline and harbor below.

My personal opinion on Braud & Co is that it is an absolute must-visit spot in Reykjavik. The coffee served here is some of the best you can find in town and the atmosphere is always buzzing and inviting. Plus, the views over the harbor are stunning and you can easily while away an hour or two here while enjoying breakfast with friends.

Álafoss

Located in Reykjavik’s old industrial district, Álafoss offers a unique experience for those looking for a more traditional Icelandic breakfast. Founded in 1895 by an Icelandic merchant sailor, this restaurant serves a wide range of locally made traditional food such as skyr, fresh fish dishes, pancakes and pancakes stuffed with special ingredients like Icelandic sheep’s cheese or salt cod roe. Álafoss also serves up some classic hot beverages like Icelandic teas, coffee and hot chocolate.

My personal opinion on Álafoss is that it is definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for an authentic Icelandic breakfast experience. The atmosphere here is cozy and inviting with lots of character, and the food served here is really delicious and unique. It isn’t too crowded either, so you won’t have to worry about long lines or too much noise.
